The intro to the review of this on IGN make me laugh out loud. Comically bad. Looks alright, just more dourness and misery. Couldn't be arsed mid way through the second.

Reboot Lara seems stuck in the dark age of comic books. Reminds me of the ill-fated Spiderman movies. During the entire second and third movies I was like "does this dude ever get to have any fun?". Seriously.

And here I thought we were past those years.

I've been mopping up some trophies in TR 2013 and it was striking how much more memorable it is than RotR, which was just bland. If Shadow is a return to form in this respect as EG's review seems to indicate, my interest has just shot up significantly.

@dominalien I'm not sure if it's down to the first one (well, first reboot) being more memorable exactly but I did finish it almost in one go whereas I didn't go back to RotTR fairly quickly each time after I've started (re)playing it.

So whatever the reason, RotTR didn't quite stick for me as well.

I'd love to get back into the murder story and add more jigsaw puzzles. The new games are awesome fun, but I'd like to hear more about the older style in Shadow.

The jigsaw puzzles always were the highlight of the franchise.

Got this shipped early and managed a couple of hours last night. Good so far with all the glowy hints turned off - exploring feels a bit more meaty. Fights may turn into a slog, so I suspect I'll end up turning combat difficulty down. Look gorgeous in 4K. I saw a trailer on TV in SD after playing and it looked like shite!

High-framerate mode is excellent. Makes a huge difference to how the game feels

I'm hoping this arrives today, so I can fire it up tonight.

How big was the one X patch? Multiple gig, or a few hundred Mb?

Lara is a ridiculous vandal. Just willfully destroying ancient artifacts for XP. You shoot and destroy carving in the first tomb for XP. Weird.

    Ouch. Thanks.

Luckily, I have decent download speeds, so it won't take too long, but man the days of just getting a game and playing it right away have well & truly gone, haven't they!

I've turned off survival instincts but the game seems designed for them and a whole section of the skill tree is for seeing things with survival instinct s.

Pretty light on the annoying generic bad guy enemies so far, plus I've killed a few monkeys.

Are they as bastardly as the monkeys in Tomb Raider 3?

Is the dialogue still the most cringeworthy thing ever?

@askew Dunno. I learnt my lesson and shot them all on sight this time!

I’ve enjoyed the couple of hours I’ve played thus far. I think this setting tickles my fancy more than Siberia.

I got a tickle out of changing my outfit to the Tomb Raider 2 combo.

It's pretty bad and the acting is not much better.

It's very much Rise of the Tomb Raider Part 2. Don't expect anything different. Less combat maybe.

20 percent of the way through and only had to use my gun once so there is definitely less forced combat and stealth opportunity.

How important from a narrative point of view is it to play Rise before this one?

I enjoyed the first game well enough at the time, even though did it did nothing special. Never bothered to get the second game. I don't mind the look of the locations but the apparent combat focus really puts me off.

From what I've read and heard this one has less combat and more focus on tombs, environmental puzzles etc. Will I miss much skipping Rise?

    @Dombat

I don't think it will make a lot of difference - basically the bad guys want a thing, and Lara tries to get there first. The bad guys are some kind of paramilitary organisation / cult who were the enemy in Rise as well, but I don't recall there being an awful lot of backstory / motivation to worry about.

Thanks, yeah I thought as much. Not like I remember much from the first game anyway!

Some nice little touches like the game moving leaves out of your line of sight of Lara when you move the camera so you can always see her. Never seen that before.
