If PS5 is due for 2019 we should be closely approaching the time for devkit leaks now that this years GDC is over. If there is any place where new system specs are shared with devs it is at GDC. It was two weeks after GDC 2012 when Kotaku got the scoop on Orbis (PS4 devkit) from a dev willing to open up. In Feb 2013 the PS4 was revealed.

I still think 2020 will be the PS5 launch (7nm and all that) but who knows with this unpredictable industry.

Point is, the time could be very near! New system specs leaks are always a fun time.

    What specs are people predicting?

For me, I am trying to be reasonable and say...

    - 12TF GPU (Navi)
    - 8 core Ryzen 2 (no SMT)
    - 24GB GDDR6 RAM
    - 32GB or 64GB flash for HBCC
    - $450 (£400), maybe $500 (£450) at a push
    - All on 7nm

With the PS4 and Switch still selling bucket loads, I can't see a new generation coming along next year. The console prices are still a bit too high for that as well, so I think it's far too soon to be predicting hardware specs for the next gen.

It'll likely be Microsoft that triggers the next gen, given they're on the back foot, but seeing as they're charging as much as they are for the X, I think we're looking at late 2020 at the earliest.

If you're suffering from a leaky orbis then please seek medical attention.

    I'd say...

    - 36TF GPU (Navi)
    - 24 core Ryzen 3 (with triple SMT)
    - 96GB GDDR6 RAM
    - 128GB or 256GB flash for HBCC
    - $450 (£400), maybe $500 (£450) at a push
    - All on 1.7nm

Launching (you heard this first here guys) in 2019!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem is that there's not really much of a push or need for new consoles right now. One of the telltale signs of a new console launch was the library struggling to keep up with PC performance and huge compromises being made.

When the PS1 hit its stride in 1998/1999, many of the PC games were already of PS2 quality to a degree that the PS1 could never have achieved: Unreal, Colin McRae Rally, Quake 2.

When the PS2 hit its stride in 2003/2004, we were seeing PC games like Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry.

And to be honest, the actual benefits that the PS3-to-PS4 generational "leap" offered beyond resolution and frame rate were minimal at best. The differences between PS3 and PS4 in like-for-like ports are much less pronounced than with PS2-to-PS3 (try playing the PS2 & PS3 versions of Call of Duty 3, then try playing the PS3 & PS4 versions of Advanced Warfare to see what I mean).

What does PC gaming have to offer right now that consoles can't achieve? That's the question you need to be asking to find out if a new console is a viable proposition in the near future, and the answer is: fuck all.

Added to that is the issue that many games are moving away from the massive budgets of five years ago. We've seen a strong return to 2D and revived interest in "neo-retro" gaming.

It's great having 24GB of RAM in a console and 12TF of GPU power, but what's the point of all that expense when games aren't being developed to use it? You'd be hard pushed to find many PC games that make active use of more than 12GB nowadays, and consoles make much more efficient use of their memory (the OS of a dedicated console consumes much fewer resources than in a PC).

    I wouldn't expect to see a PS5 until 2021/22 at the earliest.

I kinda hope they don't design the new consoles until the price of graphics hardware falls (thanks, bitcoin). Otherwise they'll either be underpowered or overpriced.

PC GPU prices has no relevance to console prices/power.

Theres no way a ps5 is coming next year. Not with how ridiculously well they're selling and the Pro getti g released not so long ago. Late 2020 I reckon.

The library is cross compatible, they could launch whenever they want and just flip some 4K switches in the games and be done with it. Will launching too soon upset some pro users? Doubt it, people don’t seem to mind a new iphone every year.

It may be a sign of getting old, but it feels like this generation has barely even started.
I'm also saying that as a non-PS4/Xbox One owner.

    Wrong.

1998 onward was already past the mid-point of the PS1 mainstream shelf life. The Dreamcast was coming out, the PS2 was going to be launched at the end of 2000. At that point it was already coming up to four years old, the fair comparison is PS1 games against PC games from 94 and 95.

Please take an honest look at PC games from the late 90s. How many graphically match Silent Hill 2 or Metal Gear Solid 2? Half Life as it was already looked like warmed over garbage in 2001.

It is strange, the generation kicked off in 2013 but I barely feel that's case. As Zulu mentions I don't see much being pushed on the PC front that would require a new generation so quickly. Consoles are still getting games that look bloody beautiful and personally speaking I didn't feel the jump with this generation like I did with the PS2/Xbox to the PS3/360 and I imagine we'll feel the transition even less with the next generation.

Those saying the PS4 is still selling well... You don't follow up on your big brand only when the sales are down. That's usually a good way for competition to get in first and steal away your audience in the meantime. You follow up when the brand is still selling strong. 2019 will be six years on from the PS4 launch. That's a typical generation cycle, there. And the existence of Pro changes nothing on that front. The Pro (and X) are just more elaborate hardware revisions.

The only reason I think 2019 is unlikely is because of the availability and price of the necessary tech. In terms of sales timing, there is nothing unusual about a successor releasing six years on and alongside the predecessor still selling relatively well.

It would be nice to see a fully back compat Playstation 5 in 2020 or 2021 with a BDXL / 4K drive for 128GB discs.

3.2GHz+ CPU cores, for at least 4 of them, if it would be wise / efficient to vary them in such a manner.

I'd be absolutely fine with no new generation until 2022 or beyond, though.

Only issue there, is that Rockstar may want the next GTA to straddle the two generations again, as it's working bloody well for them at the moment.

We may not see GTA VIce City until the year (before) the new consoles arrive, depending on how well Red Dead does at retail and online. I can't bloody wait to see Vice City built from the ground up around the Xbox One X, PS4 Pro & GTX 10x0 systems.
