Grainger are closing their remaining stores, but the biggest to crumble is GAME who according to someone's facebook status are handing out redundancy notices to their staff (he knows people). Whether it's a downsizing, just one store or the entire shebang I don't know, but it's not looking great for those trade in options.

Anyone from GAME want to share?

I know of a few people who've been let go at head office so it does seem like they're trimming their sails. Think they were variously part of the sales and esports teams, which seems odd given the increase in esports currently.

You could probably replace games stores with 'the high street' since a day didn't go by without reports of some chain going tits up.

If physical stores disappear then my console game buying will probably plummet. I buy basically everything for my PS4 via browsing and impulse in person.

Oh well, can't remember the last time I bought something from a real game shop anyway.

Do the prices not put you off, though? I'm incredibly impulsive but even I will baulk at paying an extra tenner for something I can get within 24 hours.

I go into game all the time with an urge to waste some money but always come out empty handed.

Fuck Game. Feel sorry for anyone made redundant but I'm pretty sure they'll be better off in the long run.

I met my life partner in a Game store. A 12 year old Namibian boy named Eetook.

We both reached for the same copy of Elemental Gearbolt.

    From their our romance blossomed.

In my experience, browsing and impulse is just as easy from my games console

I don't even feel the urge to pop in when I'm walking past it in town anymore, such is it's irrelevance.

Yeah but for non-sale items physical is cheaper than digital and that extra 10-20 per title is a decent wedge for someone who doesn't earn all that much like me.

Plus Ive got a High Fidelity streak that enjoys staring at shelves

I feel like I'm a luddite when I buy games as physical media online rather than just downloading them, so the collapse of high street game stores has been long overdue.

Eetook and I would often speculate about the future of Game stores.

I was reassured by his wise words.

Elephants drink at the same waterhole as the hyena.

Truth, but since this is supposed to be a games forum I thought I'd trim it down.

Last few days of the financial year... often a grim time for high-street closures, but this year does feel particularly bad.

GAME share price isn't currently tanking and had a mini-spike earlier in the week. Looks more consistent with a round of sails-trimming redundancies than a collapse into administration.

For brick and mortar in glasgow city centre you have pretty much one game store, two Cexs and i think thats pretty much it. I think theres a game in one of the other shopping centres. I dont think ive bought anything from them in a long long time. As everyone says the price difference compared to looking around online is nuts even the pre-owned stuff.

After years of mostly drinking pretentious craft beers (hardly drink anymore), I have to say I've learned to appreciate a cold tin of Carling and/or Fosters now and again. Yes, they don't have an abundance of character, but they're both reasonably refreshing amber coloured liquids that don't get you too hammered if you're careful.

@nudistpete I sometimes drink Budweiser (the US version) for precisely that reason, but I really don't think I could stretch as far as Fosters, let alone Carling.

@Dirtbox its far more than trimming, there has been 3 waves of redundancies since just before Christmas including senior management. Some really good staff were cut whilst they persist with some of the shit as well. The reaction when red dead 2 was delayed was rather panicky.

I also don't wake up with a massive hangover after a few pints of Carling or Fosters.
