@THFourteen Battlemasters are very decent, but in the default configuration, heat is their main problem. I ended up trading a bit of firepower for additional heat sinks. Didn't mess around with it too much, other than that.

@THFourteen I've swapped the PPC out for a Large Laser +++ With the balance changes that generates quite a lot less heat.

Other than that, for now I've just swapped out the Medium Lasers for improved versions and an injury resist cockpit mod.

Very different game after the big patch and hotfix. Called shots are much weaker overall. Finding it quite a bit harder in places.

@orpheus The patch increased moment to moment difficulty, but it also seems to have reduced the frequency of nightmare-scenario missions.

I'm managing OK with the difficulty. I think in about 70 hours of play I've only save-scummed 2 or 3 times :p

It definitely helps once you learn how far a mech can move, and get into the habit of using terrain to limit the AI's attack opportunities. Generally I trade a bit of damage for extra armour and heat control across my mechs. Main lance is a Battlemaster, two Highlanders and a Victor. JJs on all of them. Yeah, I'm kiting with 90t Assault mechs.

I think they're introducing an Iron Man mode, but I always struggle with them, especially if the AI is a bit hinky. I had one mission where they did the "reinforcements detected," thing but they literally teleported in from thin air, behind me, in melee range. So, no thanks.

    Snared a grasshopper tonight!

Apparently they are great so I just need to work out how.

    @THFourteen PUNCHMASTER 6000

A lot of people kit them out as very close range melee / support weapon mechs. Max armour, jump in behind an opponent, open up with melee plus small lasers and MGs. Also, DFA mods if you have them.

That build is ridiculous and I love it for it.

    @MikeP

    LOL!!!

I love that idea. I dont have any arm mods, have a couple of leg mods - never used them as i hate the idea of breaking my own legs, seems pointless.

How about a flamer build? i did enjoy the brief time i used a firestarter.

    Man i love this game.

Grasshoppers are fun. I put flamers and MGs on mine and used it as a melee ambusher. Perfect for pilot kills, as MGs are great for racking up the head hits.

So, I stepped out of the game for a bit to play something else. I'll give it a few patches and months and I'll get back in when I properly have the time.

    Question though:
What makes the Grasshopper the correct mech for that particular build?

When I played, I found it hard to figure out what exactly the difference between mechs was except tonnage and hardpoints.

Couldn't you do this build for any mech with the same tonnage? Why the Grasshopper?

    It's mostly the hardpoints.

If you want a mech to become a close combat monster, it will need as many hardpoints for short range weapons as possible.

A mech that can punch and then also shoot 6 small lasers/MGs/flamers is more effective than one with only two or so.
Now you will have literally tonnes of unused weight that you can invest into more armour and jump jets and some extra heat sinks.
The mech is now extremely mobile, making it hard to hit; heavily armoured, so that it won't matter that much when it does get hit and will pack a serious punch.

While I don't use melee mechs but there are several people who are very happy with their punch-bots.

Engine size and hardpoint config are the two “fixed” mech stats. The most extreme example is the Banshee. A 95T mech whose huge engine gives it great speed but next to no room for weapons.

@Rogueywon I came across a couple of them the other day. They're awful. Equipped with two peashooters and a dart gun, pretty much.

I built up and tried the Melee Grasshopper with some things I had laying around. It's absolutely not my style of play, but it's quite funny. Definitely, definitely needs very good DFA and arm mods to be effective, also a pilot protection cockpit is advised.

It's quite an expensive style of play, as you're piling in close. My normally playstyle is a gruesomely surgical dissection of the enemy, rather than grabbing a bunch of keys in your fist and just windmilling into the fray.

Sweet encountered an awesome, two stalkers and a victor all in one mission this morning. The grasshopper and it’s miniguns managed to take out the pilots of both awesome and victor, and kindly salvage meant I have the parts for all of them now!

Finished the campaign now, what a ride! looks like about 95 hours played but 30 of those were probably just having the game running whilst doing other things.

Got my reward but rather than itching to try it out i'm more tempted to start again with one of the mods like Roguetech… It's not like the game got "easy" by the end, 4.5 skull missions still require careful planning and skill, but default lance of Orion LRM boat, Highlander, Highlander and Grasshopper didn't really need much tweaking.

Would like to go back to using lighter mechs and a variety of tactics.

All in all fucking awesome game.

@THFourteen Grats on finishing it. I note the devs are talking about adding more variety to procedurally generated missions for future DLC content, with missions that keep light/medium mechs viable in the end-game.

To be honest, though, if you exclude remasters, this is probably my GOTY 2018 so far.

I mean I don’t get the chance to play all the modern games but this was already my GOTY and this probably cements it.

Ooooh... expansion! Not sure this will be my GOTY, but it certainly has to be a contender.

Yeah with other games like Dead Cells, Pillars of Eternity 2 and stuff out this year i'd be hard pressed to make this GoTY but it's for sure been a favourite and I love that it's getting more content.

No, none of us in 8 pages of discussion about it tried it. :)

    None of us liked it.
