Blimey, this feels very, very XCom once you get into combat. There's a turn-order thing going on, which means units have a move rotation within a given turn rather than one side doing all of their moves at once, but other than that it really does feel XCom-ish.

Though going to need to watch out for mechanics which look familiar but have some deceptive differences. Sprinting is clearly pretty important in this, not just for covering ground, but also for stacking evasion charges.

Fucking HELL but this is tense. Started playing this hours ago and only just noticed the time. It's not perfect. I've picked up quite a few irritations, niggles and flaws in the first few hours. But it's bloody compulsive.

@neems itís short but still two slots, if he needs low profile ie one slot it wonít fit.

Think 1050Tis are single slot IIRC

Ah right, with you - the 1050Tis should be a decent upgrade over a 560 though yeah?

Low profile usually refers to it using a short pci bracket rather than number of slots. They normally come with a choice to change between the 2 but come in lots of depths.

I wonder why there are so unusually many trolls attracted to the games steam forum ("No blondes!", "Not afrofuturistic'", "More than two pronouns!" etc.)

Aren't you the guy that had a system builder knock you up a new PC with a 980 in it awhile back?

Hmm... the AI really does seem to prioritise killing my lightest mech in the field. I've managed to win a few battles now by basically using a Locust or Spider as bait (keeping its evasion stacks high) while my medium mechs let rip.

@challenge_hanukkah nope, however guys, thanks for the help. Maybe I should have asked a few years ago. Mini 1060 is another that came up when I mentioned this nano to a friend last night.

I bought my pc a good few years ago (mainly for mmo's as you couldn't get them on console then) at the time it was slightly ahead of the 360 curve. It's scarcely been used since really but I'm getting back on it a bit recently thanks to some rogueycodes etc.

I believe the main issue is the length of the cards tbh,I've a few slots free but there's not a lot of room in there. I'm not really all that clued up (as you can tell) fwiw the desktop I have is a dell inspiron 620s

Anyway sorry to hijack the thread, but if I can get up there
to run it I'll be taking a look at this.

Just taken the case off, the 560 I have takes up two slots so that's not such a problem, the back of it doesn't have all that much room behind it before it meets some of the protruding clips on the motherboard though, maybe an inch max, power supply is currently 600w.

Christ, I see the Gamergate fucks are heavily trolling the Stream reviews at the moment over the fact that you can utilize a non-gender-specific pronoun during character creation.

If the human race could just die off completely, that'd be swell.

It's a fucking outrage that thing that has no impact on the game, is entirely optional and can be ignored is infecting their game.

Fucking hell... I just did the first main-story mission (excluding the tutorial) and that was HARD. Gotta admit, for the final section of the mission, I did resort to save-scumming a bit.

Getting a better handle on the combat now. Attack angles (i.e. which side of the enemy mech you hit) makes a huge difference. The "boss" at the end of the mission was absolutely creaming me when I was focussing on frontal attacks. Got two of my lighter mechs behind him via jump-jets and he died fairly quickly.

Yeah, there are some cool tactical considerations to take in this. Knowing when to reserve your light mechs to take advantage of double moves is handy. Plus jump-jetting in behind for an anus punch is always cool.

I'm assuming the bellends offended by pronouns will soon be launching their own van-based crusades, so beware.

Sprinting light mechs around and using Sensor Lock in conjunction with bigger LRM mechs seems like a good combo too.

Yeah, I find the weapons loadout on Spiders and Locusts is so thin that it's barely worth firing against other mechs. Much better to sprint around drawing fire and using Sensor Lock.

That said, they do seem to hold up much better in combat vs wheeled/tracked vehicles. Dashing in and getting stompy on a tank is pretty effective, given how much bonus damage non-mech vehicles take from melee attacks.

Edit: The above doesn't apply to Jenners, which, despite being light mechs, seem to hit fucking hard. Funny really, the Jenner has been the default start-mech in loads of Battletech/Mechwarrior games, but I hadn't noticed until this one just how much of a punch it packs.

I'm terrible for savescumming in these kind of games, where the outcomes can be pure rng. Also get the satisfaction of banging your head against a wall that suddenly gives way when you breakdown where you going wrong.

I found in X-COM 2 that it was a particular issue. Dropping in new enemy types where you don't know their abilities at all (hello Codex), part-way through a mission, just feels unfair in an environment where failure can have a dramatic impact.

You can argue that sort of game design actively encourages save-scumming, unless you're the sort of player who has the time, patience, and mindset to enjoy failing over and over as you learn.

I've always felt that the uncertainty and panic that creates is what makes the best stories. Xcom was always more interesting when you had people dying in horrifically sudden ways and then someone else suddenly popping up with some heroics.

This seems quite similar in that regard. Should create some great/terrible moments.

RIP Dekker - Headbutted to death by an armless (yet still surprisingly deadly) robot bastard

@MikeP At least, unlike XCom, we're dealing with a setting whose unit roster has been known for decades. The chances of getting a completely new and unexpected enemy-type dropped on you mid-mission are slim.

Plus we're 25 years too early in the timeline for the Clans to invade.

Yeah, it's a tricky balance. I've been back playing Eve Online for about 18 months, so you'd think I'd be used to large, unpleasant, surprises by now!

Maybe I should just spend more time committing to my mistakes, if that makes sense? I just found that (certainly with the original XCOM) that you could get it wrong and be in what felt like an inevitable decline and not realise for some time.

@StarchildHypocrethes Same. I just took down an enemy lance in a straight up 4-vs-4 battle where they had a significant tonnage advantage on me, without losing any mechs.

This made me happier than I can possibly describe in words.

This is XCom all over again and I can see it eating my life.

I saw some reviews that this thing doesn't run very well on low end hardware? I thought it's a turn based game, no? I've just got a potato Lenovo laptop, is this a no-go then?

Oh hell yes, I just took control of the Argo. And now a whole new range of the game's systems open up in front of me.

The XCom parallels grow deeper and deeper.

Second main plot mission much easier than the first. That Jagermech gave me a bit of a fight, but its rear armour is basically paper.
