Registered 7 years agoOk, not hating - makes no difference to my life at all and everyone can do as they please, but I honestly do fail to understand the appeal if you know it's fake/predetermined etc.
Can someone please explain? I liked it when I was a kid but when I found out it was staged it totally ruined it for me. I'm assuming when you found out you were just "meh" but carried on watching? -

Did she done a double forward roll at any point? -

Registered 5 years agoI don't watch it myself, but I think that's a fair argument. It's a semi-violent soap opera and I can see the appeal. Some of the athletics one display can be quite impressive and it offers the same sort of entertainment you'd find in an action film. -

Registered 7 years agoIt's fucking ridiculous, campy hyper OTT acted, silly soap opera guff. But it's it's good to watch with friends. A guilty pleasure. We were all into it as kids during the Ultimate Warrior / Hogan era, then again when Stoke Cold and The Rock were the main names. Not many of them have enough personality to keep it interesting and I can't imagine sitting through the full 5-6 hours of it.
Don't watch any of the PPV's but Wrestlemania always good value with how much goes into it and how big the crowds are. The last 2 years with the open air stadiums were fucking spectacular.

Registered 15 years agoDifferent age when you had those though. Height of the monday night wars between WWF and the other productions ongoing. Plus they weren't aiming at a younger fanbase. Stone Cold would come out and smash beers, women were paraded like sex objects (Bra and Panties matches were a thing, should you need reminding), people would trash talk fully, more insane stunts like the Mankind 30ft drop, cutting was used more to promote blood being spilled in the ring, they could still do headshots with chairs and other objects, etc.
I watch it these days occasionally because it's still fun watching what is paramount to bodybuilding clowns hitting each with amdram over the top, and the fights themselves aren't choreographed fully beforehand so you also get that "will there be an accident?!" vibe when things are happening that makes it all a bit exciting.
Can't watch the ridiculous amounts of PPV's or weekly shows though. The saturation point is pretty low down for me for as entertaining as it tries to be. -

That's why the fact it's fake doesn't bother me in terms of being entertained. Shit wrestling is awful but when it's good enough to suspend your disbelief the medium can be great.
All I can say is watch a couple of recent "highly rated" matches and suspend your disbelief the same way you would watching a film or any other TV show. -

I've been bodybuilding for the last 10 years so just thinking about the injuries they could pick up mskes my arse twitch. Even some of the jumps from the top turnbuckle to the floor must come keen.

Quasi-related, but someone I know has defended wrestling by going full conspiracy theorist against all organised sport. According to him, literally every pro and semi-pro sport is 100% rigged and carefully choreographed based on a script. Even something as benign as college basketball is apparently completed rigged and acted out at the game level in order to maximize profits (somehow).

Registered 15 years agoI love that idea. At some point, as you graduate from scuffing a ball about in a muddy field as an eight year old, someone pulls you aside and says “here, kid- read this script and SHHHHHHHH don’t tell ANYONE, right?”. -

Gotta say NJPW is where it's at these days for me. Especially if you grew up through the attitude era

Check out the first match from the NXT Takeover show the night before, it's pretty great! And the main event and tag titles match. Whole show is under 3 hours so a lot easier to digest than the WM slog.

NXT is the WWE's performance centre / "b league" federation. It has its own weekly one hour TV show and roster. Most wrestlers spend a year or two there before graduating to the main programme. It doesn't feel B league at all though and most of the roster are indie wrestling scene darlings. Some great UK guys included. And virtually all the best wrestlers on the main show have recently come up from NXT. It's also where the women's revolution started 4 years ago eg treating female wrestling as a credible thing.
Basically a self contained non Vince McMahon little universe, way less corporate than the main show and leans heavily towards the wrestling side more than the 'sports entertainment' stuff.
Takeover is its quarterly pay per view which they've been having for about 2 years now. Usually only a two hour show. It's grown big enough to sell out Arenas by itself and many people prefer it massively over the main wwe stuff. Every Takeover will have at least a couple of 5 star classic matches.
If you've got access there's some classic matches to recommend including this match of the year between two young brummies weirdly enough

This formula works in pretty unpredictable ways. For example, there's this guy called Daniel Bryan who the fans adore. He's excellent in the ring and is an extremely likeable everyman. The problem is he looks nothing like a champion. He's small, not well built, and looks a bit rough around the edges with straggly hair and a long unkempt beard. So in spite of the audience bringing the house down for him and clearly saying "this is our guy", WWE held him back in favour of your John Cenas and your Roman Reigns because they look better on magazine covers and breakfast TV interviews. In other words, in this "sport" where everyone knows it's a show, predetermined, fake, whatever you want to call it, there's a completely real underdog story going on. Eventually WWE finally saw fit to capitalise on this, and for Wrestlemania 30 booked him to win the championship in the most "against all odds" way possible and it was absolute magic.
There really is no other business like it. That being said, I basically only watch the PPVs, and even then only with company. Like others have said it loses its impact when watching alone and I can't imagine watching 5 hours of Wrestlemania on my own. But in a crowd of similarly minded people, having a beer and exchanging banter and theories as to what's happening "behind the scenes" while making your predictions for the night, it's good harmless fun.
This is why the "you do know it's fake, right" thing is basically a meme amongst fans, because it's the accuser who has catastrophically misunderstood the situation rather than the accusee. By all means you have the right not to enjoy it, or not understand the appeal, but you shouldn't ever suggest that people only enjoy it because they think it's real. Not that you did, but FYI. -

Registered 10 years agoOne thing I would add to those struggling to understand how people find enjoyment out of a predetermined contest on top of the soap opera in spandex / there's art in choreography / you have to respect the physicality even if you don't appreciate the end product arguments.
If you buy a boxing PPV, you are essentially paying to see one match. Yes there's an undercard, but the stadium only really fills up for that one headline contest. And then you have no idea if you're going to get your money's worth by the end. The match could last seconds, or it could last twelve rounds. It could be explosive, or as is more often the case these days, it could be a war of attrition which, in all honesty, may not be that much fun to watch. There's no guarantee.
However, with a WWE event, you are paying for a whole evening of entertainment. In an event like Wrestlemania, the whole show is booked months ahead so you should be invested in each match on the card. In this year's event, the card started with the company's three best workers delivered a hot opener to get the crowd going, Asuka put a three year undefeated streak on the line against the women's champion, WWE legends The Undertaker and Daniel Bryan wrestled their first matches in a year and three years respectively, one of the biggest names in MMA wrestled her first match, and the company's top guy took on another MMA legend, (widely reported to be heading back to the UFC). There was a bit of filler here and there, but on the whole, if you're a wrestling fan, these matches actually meant something. No one turned up just to see the main event. -

Registered 14 years agoHeh, I wouldn't be surprised if nobody was there because of the main event in this case. -
I also managed to get my girlfriend into it by getting her to watch the ladder match from the recent NXT Takeover event. She liked it because they all went "perchong!"
