I'm waiting for the inevitable delay announcement 1 month before release for another year, then when that comes around, announce it'll be delayed indefinitely and finally come out 3 years later.

    It's traditional.

They released Cossacks 3 a couple of years ago.

This is somewhere up there with Half-Life 3 being announced though. Good times.

And then I remember they announced Stalker 2 seven years ago and then cancelled it a year later.

There's been nothing like it since CoP.

Are most of the original team still at GSC?

I'm pretty sure a fair bit left to make Metro at 4A.

Now rumoured to be built using Unreal Engine 4 instead of their X-Ray engine.

Hopefully we get a little trailer or screen shot sometime this year. Still hyped, but in an ideal world would love a another Stalker on a modern day X-Ray engine. How much of that atmosphere in the game is down to the engine?

A little trailer of what though, if it's supposed to be released in 2021 then I doubt there's anything of gameplay substance to show really.

I mean at least UE4 means it won't be quite such a janky mess? Maybe. Although it might lose some of its charm given that.

The jank was half the charm, but if they can port the A-Life engine to UE I can deal with it,it was Stalkers heart and soul. Along with twiddling about with clicky, pingy weapon attachments.

It created the finest moments of emergent gameplay I have ever seen from any game.

It was also sadistically hard quite frequently, I've never pressed F5 so much.

Aye, the random encounters in STALKER haven't really been matched since. Stumbling upon some mutated warthog chasing a grunt, which both get sucked into an anomaly. Good times.

    https://dtf.ru/games/20333-sergey-galenkin-podelilsya-podrobnostyami-o-s-t-a-l-k-e-r-2

Soooo this Russian site claims that the game is, at most, in early design stages and Sergey didn't even tell his team before announcing it in an effort to gauge public interest, entice a publisher and get some funding to begin work in earnest.

Not unheard of, it's fairly common practice within Nintendo and Square Enix, but it often means the game could take quite a bit longer than initial thinking.

And as an aside, I'm not all that trusting of a Russian site decrying the efforts of a Ukrainian developer given the current climate, but what the fuck do I know. It's actually very likely given the absolute lack of media beyond a hasty photochop that I could have swung together in all of 20 seconds and a distant, but not too distant date slapped on it.

    Watch this space I spose.

I feel like they probably haven't.

Else, where the fuck is it?

Didn't this guy fire the majority of his team that worked on the original and they all went to make some other stuff and a fair bit went to make the Metro series? I'm massively sceptical on it being anything other than vaporware.

Metro is decent, but doesn't come close to STALKER.

The original stalker was vaporware for a long time too. So was Metro for that matter.

Stalker is all about the atmosphere, and all the jank and twiddly inventory stuff amplified that. Metro completely skipped that aspect in favour of streamlining it for consoles and adding set pieces rather than the emergent and constantly unique and unpredictable gameplay that A-Life gave Stalker, and so Metro never managed to achieve anything like the same level of immersion. It stood on the shoulders of a giant, but somehow misunderstood what it was that made Stalker a giant in the first place.

That's not to say 2033 and Last Light aren't good games, but they're no better than any other AAA shooter. Endlessly linear, predictable and almost completely forgettable.

Agreed. Metro is a very good shooter, Stalker is a way of life that happens to have guns in it.

I know CoP has a lot of improvements, but nothing can beat SoC for pure... je ne sais quoi.
