So, Fallout 4 online, with a larger map and mutated sloths. No quests or story, just explore, build and fight.

If it's like the recent Conan, and has PvE servers with a decent community aspect (different themed towns with dresscodes etc) it could be fantastic fun. But you know it'll descend into l33t kids rushing to get nuke codes to grief everyone else though.

    Also, MICROTRANSACTIONS I'll wager.

There is a story, they have said you can play solo just to experience the story if you wish.

With no NPCs in a completely depopulated world there won't be any story worth the experience.

Though at least it does mean Bethesda won't be able to include their trademark insufferable yet invincible gits like Maven Blackbriar or Mayor Macready.

Considering they've said each world will only have a few dozen players at a time spread across a fairly sizable map, it seems unlikely there won't be NPCs.

They haven't said anywhere there will be no npcs. Everything so far points to this being a typical Bethesda Fallout game but with a bigger emphasis on base building and team based exploration/combat. Pretty sure there will still be npcs to interact with which is where the story element of the game will come in

They have stated that every other human is a real player, but I'm assuming that there will be some npc quest givers, but they'll all be Ghouls, mutants, robots, etc. I think it could be a really fun experience but I have some pretty big reservations, hopefully the beta will be fairly soon so we can see exactly how it all works.

M main worry at the moment is that this is Bethesda Game Studio's next title, with the "next-gen" Starfield to come after and then Elder Scrolls VI to come after that so the next Fallout game is probably... what? 6 years away at absolute minimum?

The next fallout game is ages away but I'm concerned the next real fallout game will have this in as publishers think "oh that was popular lets do it again".

NPC quest givers are robots iirc or missions appear on pip boy but the quality of the missions are a concern. With these survival games they tend to be generic crap much like the minutemen quests or repeatable quests in skyrim. Played some of state of decay 2, the quests were generic and really shit compared to the 1st game. The quality of the quests dipped in fallout 4 compared to the last 2 games, it seems like these companies are trying to slowly kill off the SP RPG side so its just survival, collecting resources (while being a cunt online to other players)

Also there is a ton of survival type games out there but they have to take another game and change into something else for the flavour of the month type gamer. XCOM3 is now a FPS survival game where you bunny hop across the map collecting "epic rare legendary mats" to build your base while screaming abuse at other players, you know some gamers would love that.

I would like to be excited for a new fallout game but it seems like Bethesda jumping on the bandwagon

Is it too obvious to suggest that this will basically be the Fallout version of Elder Scrolls Online?

Already posted my views in the FO4 thread (thanks to the fantastic EG search function I couldn't find this one) but yeah they're pretty much in line with what Darth posted above.

The Fallout universe has been one of the few I've actually cared about - always thought the humour, writing and atmosphere of the series were s.p.e.c.i.a.l. (sorry!), it's a pity they're now making this more of an online shooter. Writing was on the wall with how FO4 turned out compared to prior titles.

Cynical me reckons this wasn't just done to jump on the survival MP FPS bandwagon but also to cut development costs for creating meaty SP content.

Look how Rockstar changed its ways with its focus on GTA Online, no SP DLC at all, a sandbox with players being the content will always be less effort than writing a believable story with player choices, good voice acting, and most importantly MP games don't 'end' i.e. players won't move on as quickly compared to purely SP content. Add to that MT potential.

The other thing I'd be worried about here, and in general, is how always-online will make replaying games a tad bit more tricky once the servers get switched off in the future.

I won't be buying this game that's for sure, and it makes me sad as I've always been a big fan - even enjoyed FO4 fwiw.

It's a battle royale set in the Fallout universe with no rpg elements and using the same shitty engine they used for Fallout 4.

I'd rather invite a family of wasps to take up residence in my foreskin than play it.

I've never played any fallout game. Is FO3 still considered the best one? I notice it's on gamepass along with 4.

    @challenge_hanukkah

Maybe I should set some time aside and try and play through one. Are they all separate self contained stories? So I could play NV without playing 3 and I could play 4 without playing any of the previous ones?

There is a loose continuity, certainly where the first 2 games are concerned, but you're fine picking up and playing any of them story wise really.

In a warm note to fans posted on Twitter today, Bethesda described the decision to create an online-only version of Fallout 'very scary' and admitted having the same questions a lot of Fallout fans still do: "What exactly is this?" The note also states that Fallout 76 isn't a finished game but 'a starting line', and also warns that, yeah, there's gonna be 'unforseen bugs' and potentially 'spectacular issues' ahead for players.

"Some we're aware of, such as areas where performance needs to improve with lots of players," the note reads. "Others, we surely don't. We need your help finding them, and advice on what's important to fix. We'll address all of it, now and after launch."

When Bethesda are warning you in advance about the amount of bugs it's probably just going to set fire to your living room when you turn it on.

The Creation Engine (which is really just a tarted up GameByro engine) really does need taking behind a barn and put out of its misery.

In fairness, developing a new engine would cost a lot of money and it's not like Bethesda are swimming in money or anything.

Exactly. They need more microtransactions and should crowd fund Fallout 5.

Not sure how to feel about this one... I mean, I really love multiplayer with roleplaying possibilities (had very good times in WoW servers with some friends some time ago), but I'm not sure if Fallout's universe can handle that kind of experience...
