Privacy Policies

Since the updates on data protection we are all getting these messages in our inbox and on sites regarding data tracking. It’s been a bit of an eye opener to me, I knew data tracking occurred but the extent of it is unbelievable.

I hadn’t received a privacy update from Eurogamer so I thought I’d check their privacy policies, 2 out of the 3 opt out options lead to a 404 error and the final opt out requires you to install a program from google - I would question the validity of calling that an opt out!

I’ve noticed some other sites don’t bother to give you the option, for instance Polygon’s options are you either turn off cookies in your browser or don’t visit the site, which I found quite interesting considering they portray themselves as a moral leader in games journalism.

Anyway, I’m quite interested in learning more. I presume by opting out of these sites I still have a cookie in a folder somewhere that says I’ve opted out so fundamentally I can still be tracked. I wonder if we’ll start to see the return of more subscription based services without data tracking - I think I’d probably pay for that now.

Also, I might be naive but Apple’s actions in this area have lead to me picking up an iPad and my next phone will be an iPhone. They’ve definitely got a new / returning customer here.

Anyone else boogled by the amount of data capture going on?

Nah, it’s just how online advertising works. In TV advertising you have audience demographics for channels, programmes and time of day - online has this to a degree but then advertises figured that they could track people to get a much better idea of who they’re serving ads to.

Better demographics leads to better conversion rates which in turn leads to more/better/bigger clients and more $$$

I can’t see data tracking or advertising going away, it’s too big an industry and a lot of sites rely on the revenue, if they all start switching to a subscription basis to replace ad revenue you’ll see a lot of sites disappear.

If these things bother you I'd recommend paying for a VPN like Virtual Shield. A VPN is pretty much the only way to guarantee anonymity on the internet nowadays.

I don't thinks it's that surprising that there is so much data collection going on; there's entire companies formed on act of selling compiled market data.
