    I think it's a valid criticism that the series never really evolved beyond the first game, but when other FPS games have become fairly homogenised, chasing the CoD formula, Halo still stands out as its own thing.

    Just the prioritisation of movement over iron sights makes the game different from most modern FPS games.

    The enemy AI has only been matched by FEAR, and the combination of energy weapons for shields, melee and grenades still make the gunplay fairly unique.

    The series will never be as innovative as Combat Evolved, but I don't think any FPS game is because the genre is so well established now.

    @Anthony_UK Halo's only real USP is its moment-to-moment combat loop, which admittedly is pretty different from the average shooter mold. That does seem to be just fine for a lot of people - though I've never liked the Halo/Destiny gunplay model personally.

    Beyond that, as you say, it is very much a series set in stasis. Probably doesn't help that it takes itself so bloody seriously, which isn't a great thing for a lightweight fps about Shooty Spaceman Shooting The Naughty Aliens.

    Haven't played the last few but I wouldn't say the enemy AI is particularly amazing in them.

    The enemy AI was very decent in Halo 1 at the time. But these days you can find better pretty much anywhere.

    It only seemed decent because the elites were bullet sponges with recharging shields, so they had more time to ponce about.

    It was definitely cheap smoke and mirrors, it was just a bit more acceptable two decades ago than it is them still doing it today.

    I wouldn't say you can find better everywhere else, they're still pretty fun to play against. I certainly wouldn't hold them up as some gold standard of AI though.

    Can we have a proper F.E.A.R. remaster now please? Doesn't need to be a full remake. Just something to sand a few of the technical rough edges off and get it playing nicely on modern PCs.

    Well the plan with Infinite is to make Halo 1 the way it was intended. Like if you look back at the very first mission, they give you the impression that you’re just driving around on an island but in reality you’re following a very tight corridor, and with Infinite they basically want to do it for real.

    I was going to just agree with you about youtubers generally, but then I watched it.

    He goes through the reveal video, pauses it in places, and talks about what he sees, which is offensive to you because why?
    And what fast cuts?
    And he talks like a human being talking to camera while discussing what he can see on his own monitor.

    I'm not sure about that, there were times when the scripting was pretty obvious, but I appreciated how they tweaked each encounter to use the environment. It was almost all setpieces though.

    Hmmm, I disagree for its time especially with how vocal the enemies were it really did create the impression that there was voodoo going on. They were definitely reactive outside setpieces too.

    The problems came when you tried to lure them outside of their areas, they weren't adaptive at all. I 'broke' their AI numerous times by running past a couple of rooms past them.

    I think they were done similarly to Half-Life's military grunt AI, which was scripted with a bunch of if statements that were only really applicable to the area they were spawned in. It's only very recently that they've managed to nail truly adaptive human-like play with the bots in CSGO, and even that has its pitfalls, and they're worthless outside of the map they have pathing for.

    @up_the_ante Obvious corporate politics at play there. Doritos are partnered with Dominoes biggest rival, Pizza Hut, these days.

    Not sure about Mountain Dew. :)

    Yeah, rather than stirring up all that negativity, Dominoes should go find another games journalist, mega-franchise and toxic-tasting soft-drink brand to get their own Pope.

    Maybe Jason Schreier, Gears of War and Cherry Coke, to fuel the Dominoes Pope?
