I'm on a bit of a household efficiency kick, going through each room to figure out the best, essential kit needed and trying to minimise dead storage, rarely used stuff, fiddly stuff, stuff that's hard to clean etc. I'm doing the kitchen first. It's about time I bought some new kitchen stuff, pots, pans, dishes and utensils etc. Any suggestions on the ideal kit for daily cooking from scratch without succumbing to loads of rarely used gadgets? Is it better to have one or two really great knives or several cheap ones? Better to have a microwave that gets used a couple of times a week at most or can that worktop space be put to a better use etc. Wooden chopping boards better than plastic? Also what do you really need in a decent toolbox and what about those fancy capsule wardrobes? |
The best / ideal kit for each room in the house (boring!)

Registered 7 years agoI basically use two knives. One ceramic for general chopping and cutting - it is very sharp for the price and stays it for much longer than steel. But it is brittle so I have a larger steel knife for carving up meat roasts with bones. Maybe a bread knife if you eat a lot of unsliced bread.
You need a couple chopping boards, I would go plastic.
I haven’t used a microwave in years, but sometimes miss it for being able to easily reheat left overs.
Not sure I can help on otherwise minimising gadgets
I just bought a japanese mandoline and it is brilliant! -

Registered 9 years agoI have a set of chefs knives and frequently use them all, at a push I could get away with 2 of them. The large and mid size ones, the others do come in handy though.
Wooden butcher's block for a chopping board.
Microwave is helpful.
Never buy a single use kitchen gadget unless it's an aeropress to make coffee.

Registered 14 years agoEy, I'll be doing all this stuff soon. Particularly as I'll be taking a size cut in the kitchen. One thing I know for sure is that a few high quality knives are worth way more than a bunch of cheap ones.
My plan is to look at some pull-out pantry type things for cupboards.

Registered 9 years ago@Technoishmatt they last forever and look a lot nicer. They also don't end up with grooves in them from the knives which are a bit unhygenic .I have 2 glass ones as well. Noone should ever have glass chopping boards, they are noisy as hell but do double up as trivets. That doesn't offer enough of a plus to warrant the noise.

I have a quality chefs and boning knives the others I can take or leave.
Always go for cheap bread knifes and paring knifes. -
I did notice that plastic chopping boards are hard to clean. Wooden board now added to my list. They are apparently more hygienic, given that less bacteria is recovered from a wood surface than a plastic one. -

Definitely a cage and an A frame, ceiling hooks would be good as well.

Think about getting an instant pot. Its a pressure cooker, slow cooker all in one and best thing is you can saute in the pot too, so you really only need one thing. -
