I assume the hammer is for the offhand?

I'm contemplating removing my left hand and replacing it with a spike as I assume I will spend more time in combat than anything else.

    Sensible.

Plus it will provide an excellent skewer for roasting rats over burning trash cans.

It's honestly dead easy and cheap to build. Plus prepping the meat is much easier than you think.

yeah, you can but it's more work prepping the meat. I've actually bought the sausage casings and a little sausage mincer but haven't attempted it yet.

Well I thought you could and some info suggests you can, but other sources say you need to get the sausage mix right or it'll go rancid. It's just a bit more work and I've had such success with standard biltong that I haven't bothered trying yet. Also, boerewors isn't exactly cheap whereas I can use normal silverside you buy at any supermarket.

I will just second the biltong maker. I bought one of these:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Biltong-Maker-Jerky-Dehydrator-Spice/dp/B01FOF4EIO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1533131346&sr=8-4&keywords=biltong+maker

    Then just do the following:

Buy Silverside (or at a push topside) beef. On sale it is usually £7 or so a kilo from Tesco or Sainsbury, when I see it I will stock up a bit.

Cut some into 2-3cm wide pieces (for normal biltong) and some 1cm thin strips (for chilli bites.)

    Make a marinade of:

    1/3rd Worcester sauce
    2/3 malt vinegar
    Add tabasco sauce for taste

Rub it into the meat liberally then rub the meat with https://www.amazon.co.uk/Safari-Spice-Biltong-Seasoning-2kg/dp/B00K28I9NA/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1533131559&sr=8-1&keywords=crown+biltong+spice

I also add in chilli flakes to the spice.

Place all in a dish, leave in the fridge for 18 hours, turning occasionally.

Hang the meat on hooks in the dryer, ensure it is not touching.

First pieces will be ready in 3 days or so if you like wet biltong, driest chilli bites and pieces will take around a week.

Better tasting than the shops and works out around £15 a kilo.

Power went out for about two hours here. My first concern was my phone of all things. Started charing it using my laptop, just in case.
Apparently it's about 48h before the looting begins in these blackout scenarios.
I was thinking eventually I would need to figure out a way to open the garage manually to get the car out?

"Dad, what caused all this, why are we living in a cave?"
"Well son, the bananas weren't bendy enough."
"Oh, that sounds like it must be serious. What did bananas do dad, were they some kind of trading commodity?"
