Can you help me choose a new TV mainly for gaming?

Hi good folks of the forum and thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give :)

My 13 year old (!) 32" 720p Samsung seems to suddenly seems to not accept HDMI input from my PS4 Slim (which works on another telly). It might still work as a TV (with some fixing presumably) if I even just get the HDMI input replaced, but in the meantime I can't play games (and I've just bought some!) and with such a big TV (bevel, footprint etc) I reckon I can get the same screen size or another slightly smaller or bigger at a good price.

    Any obvious bargains out there?

I can't go any bigger overall footprint, but this old TV is like a 35+ inch when you include the bevel and base, and that's a bit large for the place it's in.

It's mainly for my PS4 for now. I'd get a monitor but I'd like the option for possible TV use in future.

I'd like to get something soon as it's my birthday in a few days and would like to be able to at least use my PS4 that day!

    - I still have a PS3 and love the 3D games, but I gather that's not an option anymore.

    - While I'd like to go cheap(ish) but decent I know it's worth paying a bit more for future-proofing.

Amazon sent/spammed me a link to this today, but there's no HDR (I am guessing no chance at this price point), no 3D (again as above I guess they've given up?) and also it's an ultrawide - which I have no idea about and don't one to grab one if many games don't allow that setting - in fact I'd rather have the standard. It looks a little bit cheap to me - can I spend a little bit more and get something half decent? I'm a simple man really who likes fairly simple stuff and doesn't ask the world, but it'd be great to be able to play my game on my birthday, thanks in advance!:

For up to 200 I'd like to order something soon (so I can play on my birthday!).

I have Amazon Prime and a Currys/PC World just round the corner. Richer Sounds is an hour and a half round trip - happy to do that if it's means the best TV for my buck.

    Cheers!

200? Give up on HDR. Any TV in that price range boasting HDR is going to have a god awful implementation

@kimchibaka definitely don't get an ultrawide if you want it mainly for ps4. It will only work with PC as far as I know, with a ps4 you'd have black bars either side of the image.

I've got no idea about TV's really, but had a look and this one looks alright. Could be wrong, though!

Thanks loads for the help so far, especially from @OnlyJoeKing. I've read those Samsungs don't have a good field of view alas.

OK so HDR is clearly out! HDCP is too (whatever that is lol). Has no-one got a recent gaming telly 32" that they're really pleased with and is on offer at a good price?

I've got a 32" JVC something I got from Curry's last year in the spare room. The Wii U is hooked up to it and it looks fine.

It's got the same OS as the 26" Bush TV in my daughter's room, same remote and everything. I think most TVs at that price point are basically the same thing with a different badge on.

Anyway, they are all fine. Just go into Curry's and buy whatever 32" they have for that price. You probably need to add another ten inches and 200 quid to your specs before you can start using the phrase 'gaming TV'. Anything in your range are like 20 quid DVD players.

    Thanks, I'm sure you're right.

I just hoped someone of here might have a 26-32" they could particularly recommend that is also a reasonable deal, the TV options are not so important to me.

I don't understand all this new tech, I'd just about worked out 3D on my PS3 on the main telly and I love it, but it seems that's been dropped by everyone now in favour of VR, which is a shame because I love 3D.

I guess if anyone can kindly point me roughly in the right direction I'll go with that (after my own research), otherwise I will have to do the rounds of Currys, Richer Sounds etc and see what I end up with! I doubt I can do that before my birthday and I have Prime so was hoping to have something sorted soon, but this seems a right old minefield for such a basic thing!

The good news is that VR is 3D.

Seriously, not a single one of you can just say 'I have this 32" and it's really good, been really delighted with it, at least check it out'?

C'mon please, give a guy a break, it's my birthday on Monday and I've had a ****ing shit year beyond belief. I just want something OK to play my game on without any shit, but would prefer it to be as good as it gets (believe me caring for a disabled relative at 10 a day benefit doesn't make it east to buy a 55" goliath).

    Can't anyone help please?

So is 32" definitely the size you want?

It may be worth you checking some reviews online. Have a look on places like Amazon and John Lewis, read the user reviews.

I don't want to come across as a dick as I can definitely appreciate money being tight. However you really are looking at the very low end with a 200 budget, there's unlikely to be any people will be delighted with. The best you can really hope for is, not shit.

I was in a very similar situation when I bought my TV. I decided to go for a smaller TV and just sit closer too it when gaming, I ended up getting a 24" Samsung for somewhere around the 200 mark. An added bonus people seem to overlook is that while you lose the wow factor of a big image, even a 1080p set looks really sharp at that size.

32inch TVs are just getting much rarer... here in the US I had to ask in the shop where they were hiding the TVs under 50inches!

Philips aren't too bad. Little over your budget, but looks quite stylish!

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-32PFT5603-05-32-Inch-Freeview/dp/B07BJT5GM9/ref=sr_1_5?s=home-theater&ie=UTF8&qid=1533159227&sr=1-5&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A9591877031%2Cp_36%3A12413004031%2Cp_n_feature_two_browse-bin%3A161190031

This is an LG, who obvs make great TVs. Is currently on sale from 300 quid to 218.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-32LK510BPLD-32-Inch-Freeview-LED/dp/B07BRNBD9P/ref=sr_1_14?s=home-theater&ie=UTF8&qid=1533159449&sr=1-14&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A9591877031%2Cp_36%3A12413004031

You're unlikely to get any TVs at this price range with low input lag, and it doesn't seem like in the UK there are any particularly good value brands at this end. So I would probably try to go with one of the big brands, if you can't be bothered trawling all the reviews (and there will simply be much fewer online reviews for the lower end and smaller TVs).

The other question you could reconsider is whether you can't really just get a monitor. You noted you had thought about a monitor. But if you got a monitor, I think you could get a decent LG 32 inch screen with better input lag, at the same price. You could use the PS4 to watch TV through apps. You could also add a Roku or Amazon fire stick or something instead. Or even just a separate freeview box in the future for 25 quid.

I bought a 32" Toshiba from Amazon for about 175 for the bedroom. Picture is decent enough. I imagine input lag is poor at that price for all TVs. 60hz apparently.

I get to compliment it by saying "you're so much bigger than my last bedroom TV" because everyone likes to hear that.

Brilliant, many thanks for the tips and advice/recommendations folks, much appreciated :)

Yes certainly just 'not shit' appears to be my main/only priority. It seems though that I should seriously consider a smaller monitor instead for that kind of money, and maybe a decent amount of research is needed starting with the links you've kindly provided. Oh well, it would have been nice to play on Monday but better not to rush and end up with something really crap!

    Thanks again :)
