Networking issue

    Hi all,

I have what some might consider a stupid question.

I've recently switched to a new ISP and the only place they could install their modem was in the buildings cellar. My flat is on the third floor, so I thought I was being clever by getting a pair of powerline adapters and a basic gigabit wireless access point. This did not go smoothly; the connection is too unstable to be of any use.

Here's the question; can I extend the line by adding extra powerline adapters in-between floors or will that not work?

Don't most powerline adapters only have one ethernet port? I don't know how you would link them together. Were II you I would look into one of those whole house WiFi booster systems. Or get them to move the router, they must be able to extend the cable.

@azurelas_2 I'm surprised the powerlines work at all. They need to be on the same ring main and that would be unlikely in your scenario. I'd give the Wi-Fi extenders a go as has been mentioned. Failing that a cable would be the only solution.

What does everyone else do for internet? Could be a candidate for setting up a mesh network with a point on each floor? Or discretely drill through each floor and lay some cable :)

Frankly you should complain. Find out what other people are doing and have them do that.

@BigOrkWaaagh The ones I have have 2 Ethernet ports each. Moving the router is a bit of a faff since it requires drilling and cabling, so it's not really an option.

I thought adding extra adaptors should solve it if they're all on the same network.

Seems powerlines adaptors will work on different ring mains providing they are on the same phase.

I don't understand why it's ok for ethernet cable to go between floors but not whatever cable connects to your router.

Best way is to place a good wireless router central in the house, and have one ethernet cable running from that to the crappy wifi router/modem in the cellar.

If you have a lot of other wifi networks around you should probably download an older free version off inSSIDer and see what channels the neighbours are using, try and find a channel that has the least amount of other networks on it and set your router to that.

I seem to have solved the issue. More powerline adapters and a good Linksys gigabit WiFi router. Thanks for the advice everyone !
