Not quite the same, but Rama and his brother vs Mad Dog in The Raid. Yayan Ruhian is utterly ridiculous. -

Registered 17 years agoThe whole cave troll scene in Moria in Fellowship of the Rings still stands up really well today (as does most of the film in fact) as a cohesive, well directed, well edited action sequence. Even the digital grading is really nice.
I'd say most of the slow motion bits in the original Terminator are kind of perfect in their own way too, creating that paralysing sense of fear and panic.
The Frank scenes in Donnie Darko are all pretty great, dripping with atmosphere.
The shower scene in Psycho is an obvious candidate.
Pretty much any training montage in Rocky. -

Registered 14 years agoThe opening of Patton, when he gives his speech in front of the stars and bars. If someone talked at me like that, I probably would wade through blood and shit for them. Plus, George C Scott, as has been remarked upon, is probably a better Patton than Patton was.
There's loads of De Palma Da Pelma Palmatron, but the bar scene in Carlito's Way is fucking brilliant. De Palma likes to show off, there's always a bravura bit of filmmaking in practically any of his films. So, any of them, really. The lift scene in Dressed to Kill, John Cassavetes' prelude to explosion in The Fury etc etc. -

Can’t wait for the 4k release of lotr, I read all the digital effects were done in only 2K, but apparently weta has some amazing upscaling tech.

There's a scene in Scarface, where Tony is driving up to see his mum and sister for the first time in years, and it doesn't even have any people in it.
It's the entire composition of the shot with the lairy car in the foreground and the colours of the sky behind it, and the streetlight. I can't explain it, but that tiny bit of footage just appeals to me.

And the Sicilian scene.
The swordfight in the Princess Bride.
Come to think of it, the Sicilian scene in True Romance too. Plus Walken's cameo in Pulp Fiction.
I'm also partial to the opening chase in Drive. Low key and tight as a drum.
The audition scene in Mulholland Drive.
The ending of No Country For Old Men. -
Wild Bunch opening titles, up to Holden's "If they move, kill'em", the freeze frame with Peckinpah's name, the music...
Excerpt just before the freeze frame:

That was so ridiculously cool when the film first came out. I think I was too young initially to see it, I had to wait a few years, but my older sister did.

Registered 18 years agoIt must have been mentioned but Tears In The Rain sticks with me and I am also a big fan of "Rollo Tomasi" specifically the scene with Spacey and Guy Pearce, thought I love almost everything about LA Confidential.
I also like it when Arnold gets stomped or punched in the balls and pulls a face. -

My votes go to the guess the card scene in Evil Dead. "One by one we will take you". No shit deadites.
Also, Hallorans death scene in The Shining. I'd read the book by the time I saw it and REALLY didn't expect that scene to play out like it did. Absolutely shocking. The tracking build up as he walks through the lobby just layers on the tension. You know something will happen, you just don't know what, or from where. The empty hotel just seems to ooze malevolance as he creeps through.
To be honest, any scene from The Shining fits the bill.
Oh, and probably controversally, the last scene from the Blair Witch Project. I'm firmly in the camp of those that love that film and the shot of Mike standing facing the corner was just the perfect way to end that film.
Shit, one more. Ringu. The television scene.
