@dominalien just trying to live out it's live cycle. There are all kinds of nasty parasites, there's no malice involved. Of course that doesn't mean you don't get rid of the tapeworm.

Again though, just making a point that words take on a different meaning than they initially had. Especially insults. Fag has never been a word I used but they're coming for cunt now saying it's sexist and misogynist. Once they've got cunt you know fuck won't be far behind it. And then the next step is BIIRRRPP you are fined five credits for repeated violations of the verbal morality statute.
The thing there is cunt had already been used in a more general sense in other parts of the world (directed against both men and women but mostly against men). That was never true of fag, and a shitty streamer somewhere going "It wasn't what I meant" doesn't change that.

If that word is ever to change it will be because the gay community takes it for their own. Same way we did for queer. We're not really there because the word still causes a great deal of hurt.
I'm not sure why you think cunt is used mostly to insult men, it's regularly aimed at women by the most deeply abusive people (I mean that there is no levity, it's a word clearly meant to hurt). Though I suppose we can't know that without a detailed study.

It was a word I never used, but have kind of gone the other way as it's the only sweaty word to rude for post watershed TV. Which pisses me off, I always was contrary.

Watched the Breakfast Club this weekend. Was quite surprised at the use of "fag" in that. I also suspect the under-desk scene wouldn't have made it in today.

Were you all born in a commune? I am shocked you are all shocked.

Look I get it, it's a word that isn't used much anymore but in the 80's and 90's it was commonplace including my school playground, so it makes sense that is reflected in films from this time period.

It's also still used a fair bit in very recent films, and by user Decks whom I believe is bringing it back

I would say rate of use in film is directly comparable to usage in society.

Certainly when I witnessed a shanking in Belmarsh it was bandied about liberally. In comparison I was towel whipping some of the chaps for bants as we showered after the big game and only Big Rod shouted it at me. (After I caught him square in the taint.)

It was a lovely glass shelf they were on, too. Part of me hopes he dove after it and rescued all the bounty from the Moonracer, or at least marked the map so he could come back for his treasure at a later date

As I said last time we had this exact conversation about the Breakfast Club a few pages back, the word is used extensively in Superbad, which is probably a lot older than I think it is, but still.

I rewatched Ghostbusters recently and Venkman came off as a total creep - I know that attitude would normally be played as endearing, but now it comes off as really unlikable. RIck Moranis' character was a creep too, but I think it worked better because he was the butt of the joke.

Same with that Molly Ringwald upskirt scene in Breakfast Club - great movie, but christ, can't help but cringe at that now.

Not sure I agree with the Venkman analysis. Though as mentioned here he does show up to Dana's apartment with a hypodermic needle and a lot of Thorazine.

Venkman is actually a bit more rounded and less of a pig than most films of the time. He seems to genuinely care about Oscar in the shitty second film, 80s Guys wouldn't normally have any truck with that.

Plus really the big deal in Ghostbusters is Ray getting phantom metoo'ed

Me being obtuse, didn't occur to me a reply to a comment would end up at the end of the thread instead of under the comment. Reply to a comment pages and pages ago.

    This.

My parents used to say two wrongs don't make a right, but nowadays it seems men have to be punished for what went before.
