He gets a multiheal ability (Hustle Dance) much earlier than other characters, and for that alone is worth keeping around. His superb buff/debuff/status effect abilities are just the icing on the cake. In short: get him, keep him, make a skill point beeline for Hustle Dance. You'll be glad you did. Registered 16 years agoIt is fantastic on Switch. I just got the world tree bit and thought it was superbly done. I was genuinely gripped by the scene. -

Registered 15 years agoMore content (OSTs, 2D Mode, in game Quests, costumes, mounts etc) and a surprisingly faithful graphical equivalence. There is a demo if the technical side worries you too. -

Registered 9 years agoIt does look much better on the pro, at least when displayed on my plasma. Flicking between both it's night and day. If I had to choose one I'd still go Switch though, mainly for the handheld option though. -

Registered 9 years agoAt any rate, aside from the graphics (which are still perfectly fine on Switch), it's the best version of the game. Quality of life improvements, a lot more content, and a fully orchestrated soundtrack. -

Registered 9 years agoI don't think it's that clear cut if you have no intention of handheld play. The midi sound track didn't bother me and it does look a lot better on the pro. However the Switch version has more content and some nice quality of life changes and the orchestral music is obviously better even if I was fine with the midi track. -

I never play handheld tbh - have it for the Nintendo exclusives (and the odd 3rd party one). The fact it barely makes a sound and the machine is purely for games (with very little fluff on the dash) is a nice bonus too.

I went for this over the ps4 version due to wanting more portable play. Loving the game and well into it now. Im around 45 hours in. -

Registered 10 years agoI ended up getting this standard DQ11 on the PS4 Pro in a sale and tonight compared it with the definitive version on the Series X with Gamepass.
Quite annoying as the graphics downgrade is clearly noticeable with textures and especially the sparse foliage, however the PS4 Pro fan is working overtime so I won't bother playing on it. Will either wait and play it on the PS5 with BC or just accept the visual hit and plug ahead with the Series X version.
Square Enix really are such utter wankers for not upgrading the visuals to the PS4 Pro standard. -

Registered 3 years agoIt wasn't a wide enough issue that it made any noise, but funny enough it was the original release that killed my first PS4 Pro. Whenever the game got to the sewer dungeon level, the fans would suddenly kick up to full speed and the Pro would crash. Every time.
I know one other person made a complaint about the exact same issue on reddit, in the same location, but it doesn't seem as if it was wide enough for many to talk about it. -

Registered 10 years agoI originally decided to go with the PS4 version of this so playedon the PS5, really enjoying it, only at the Manglegrove. I have, however started playing the definitive edition on the Series X via Gamepass and comparing the two. I initially thought that the graphics downgrade was more important but the orchestral music is so much more pleasant to listen to.
I am now tempted to switch to that version, I'm bloody hopeless!
Right move? -

Registered 17 years agoYeah the Definitive version is definitely the way to go, not just for the music (which is much better than the original MIDI version), but also a bunch of other QoL stuff and other additions that flesh out the story a bit more. The game is pretty enough as it is too. -

Registered 5 years agoI still need to pick up DQXI. It came out so close to Builders 2 on Switch and that game, whilst great, was too much. It took me 100 hours to beat the campaign in that game and with my run through Octopath Traveller during that same year, I got completely burnt out with RPGs.
Even though it's currently on Gamepass, I'm still going to fork up the cash to play it on Switch instead. IX was my introduction to the series and along with all the DS and 3DS ports, Dragon Quest feels like a portable game to me. Something to chip away at in small bursts before bed or for those long binging sessions in which I don't need to hog the TV. I think I prefer all my RPGs this way now. -

It plays brilliantly on Switch. I'm really enjoying my time with this. Its my first DQ game and its charmed me a lot. Only 15-20 hours in, I've been playing it as you said, just in small doses, Chipping away at it. Its a good way to play it. Its feels very PS2 era RPG, hence why I'm just chipping away at it, but so much thought as gone into elevating everything to make it a really good to play. Like they have taken the ps2 era JRPG template and made the best possible game it could be. Its great.

The series as a whole feels more like the PS1 era to me, but I am absolutely fine with that. The most important thing for me is that the series is very easy to get into. It's accessible from the outset, there's plenty of freedom to deviate from the main quest and it somehow doesn't get old or outstay its welcome.
In regards to the PS2 era though, I remember Final Fantasy X being such a disappointment to me that I didn't play another RPG properly until my introduction to Dragon Quest on the DS many years later. That was a massive overreaction considering I was a big fan of other RPGs like Breath of Fire and Wild Arms, but for some reason I saw Final Fantasy as the king of the genre back then.
Now I'd argue Dragon Quest is and always was leagues ahead of that series. -

Registered 17 years agoI've been playing this on and off for months and am still only about 10hrs in. It's the only game I've played that seems to literally send me to sleep when playing. After about 30mins I will, without fail, feel my eyes beginning to go and then suddenly jolt awake. It's so weird as I actually quite like, but I will never finish it at this rate. -

Registered 19 years agoYes, the game has everything that I like on paper but I couldn't play more than half an hour a day. It took me most of last year to chip away at it bit by bit.
I can't really explain why, but I had no desire to spend hours playing this unlike a Xenoblade where I'd happily pass hours and hours into the night. -

Registered 17 years agoI've done the opposite, having put around 115 hours into it over the last couple of months, and am finally at what I think is the final dungeon. It's fair to say it's a pretty big game, and apparently there is a lot of post-game content too. I have been playing it with the Draconian mode setting on though, which sometimes made it feel like the Dark Souls of JRPGs with some ridiculous boss encounters. For the most part it's been a pretty good challenge and ensured that I made the most of all the mechanics, skill trees etc.

Really enjoying this , just going to the Emerald Coast after reading the letters from mum and grandad. I'm Level 9 I think and haven't used any skill points.
So, great sword or normal?
Which skill tree should I focus on first?
What about Erik?
I do like magic so the luminary side appeals...
