You know, we should have a video game drama or schadenfreude category, because this stuff is great.

IGN's ex-Nintendo-editor, Filip Miucin, was caught plagiarizing a video from a small youtube channel that posted a review of Dead Cells practically verbatim. But it didn't end there, Kotaku did some digging and found more examples of reviews that he'd lifted lock stock and regurgitated, and then the community forum went hunting and found that not a single thing he had written in his entire career was original work.

He was fired very quickly after the initial Dead Cells review was fingered, and now his entire body of work has been pulled from the site. To IGN's credit they've handled it quite well, but at the same time, it's a big old dent in what little reputation they had.

Some links, because you don't have to take my word for it.

And some Jim Sterling, who sums it all up, if you like that sort of thing.

Truly the Johann Hari of the gaming world.

I (vaguely) knew Hari when I was a student. He was a complete bellend.

Pretty safe bet that Miucin is similar.

Was surprised this wasn't spoken about a couple of weeks ago or whenever it blew up, fucking superb stuff! What an absolute cretin.

Stumbled across this by accident which is the reviewer talking about it initially - could be in one of the links that DB has posted above:

They should probably check his school work/thesis too.

I saw his YT video where he doubled down on the lie, didn't even apologise to the guy he plagiarised the Dead Cells review and then goaded a journalist from Kotaku by name to find more examples of his plagiarism and obviously as DB says they found fucking loads. I guarantee that type of person is more than likely a shitty individual in their personal life.

I wonder what someone like that thinks at night... Do they feel like they are clever tricksters fooling the stupid general populace or do they think what they're doing is genuine review work?

Bet he got through whatever education he has by buying exam papers.

I think everyone apologising should directly call out and challenge people that published a story about it, especially when they must surely be aware there is plenty of evidence against themselves to find.

You've got to be a grade-A dickhead to challenge the internet to find more dirt on you, knowing you've already done the dirty.

Instead of redoing all his stolen reviews Ign could license the original works and pay the authors.

Maybe IGN could start writing better reviews?

IGN doesn't really do reviews. Their entire business model consists of flowering up publishers press releases and appending some arbitrary 7+/10 scores to. They get ads in return and everyone lives happily ever after.

I wonder this too. Imposter syndrome was hard enough to fight off during my PhD and I was the one who'd actually written that. The Fear if it had been stolen would have been too immense to handle.

But then I probably don't have the right sense of self-entitlement these guys must.

One of the articles mentioned he had plagiarised another IGN writer's review. What a tool.

It’s just people that once got away with a huge lie, and they felt good afterwards, so after a period of huge stress their brain released endorphins, so they got a positive feedback loop going on for something that is inherently negative.

These serial liars dream about getting exposed though, that’s why they always get sloppy. Their brain knows it’s only way to get out of the mess they’ve created.

I like how he says that the 'normal' way for journalists is to basically google all the other reviews and read those before playing the game and doing your own. But that's 100% not plagiarism.
