In the dialogue they gave year based references or they related to dialogue mentioned in previous scenes from different time lines. For example: Ciri's time line they talk about Filavendrel's uprising. In Geralt's time the dude is still in a cave whining.

Or Ciri talks to Calanthe how when she was Ciri's age she won a certain battle, and then the next scene, Renfri is talking about a young Calanthe having JUST won that specific battle.

It took a couple of episodes but by the third one I thought it was pretty clear, once it clicked I thought it was quite well done but could have been made clearer in the opening episodes.

I don't deny the clues are there, but I just don't like playing detective when the story is naturally linear in nature.

I think I'm just terrible at putting characters' faces to names, especially when names are fleetingly mentioned only once or twice. I find it difficult to follow a lot of things I watch for this reason.

I initially found out tough to differentiate between Ciri, and Ciri's mum. Particularly since both characters were introduced in a similar court setting, with Ciri's grandmother looking identical in both cases.

I found it hard to concentrate over the sound of my brain screaming WHAT IS THIS HEDGEHOG BULLSHIT

Yeah, the main issue with time skip stuff is having to be able to both recognise they're the same actor and also what age they're meant to be.

In retrospect they should've made every character male and let the beards show what age they are.

Geralt's outfit always looks too clean; like it's fresh out of the shrink wrap.

What I'm confused about is whether the story was meant to be seen as non-chronological from the get go.

Take episode 1. There was the invasion of Cintra, and then the Geralt / Renfri story. As the viewer, you had to assume these events were concurrent, didn't you?

OK, johnnyrocketfingers mentioned above that Calanthe tells Ciri about a battle she won when she was young, then Renfri refers to this same battle as a recent event, but I didn't pick up on this, and I doubt a lot of viewers did.

One other thing that confused me was the "reveal" that Geralt was at the fall of Cintra all along, which made zero difference whatsoever. He didn't even do anything!

It is up to the writers to guide you through the intricacy's of the story rather then "discover" it via forums, WestWorld was/is also guilty of this.

Either that or the physical appearance should have stood differentiated the time periods more clearly.

Despite all that(in my opinion) was poorly implemented I still enjoyed the production values and performances, looking forward to the next series.

Yeah, despite my gripes I am looking forward to a second season. It's just that this one felt more like the set-up to something great, rather than something that was great in of itself.

I love Black Sails, probably one of the fav shows of all time and I can say the 1st season is by far the weakest. It's a lot of setup for what's to come but the setup is necessary for the bigger revelations and character beats to work. So while I enjoyed S1 for what it is, I'm looking forward to S2 and beyond for The Witcher, in hopes it follows the same path.

So hang on, hedgehog lover isn’t Ciri, but ciris mum, eurgh this all gets even more confusing then. I’m sorry but it really was a mess of an episode, why make it so convoluted, far too much bouncing about. I probably did that thing where I switch off and pick up my phone just as all the exposition is delivered.
As I said it just seemed like an excuse to show everyone’s “special” shit. During all that magic/lovey shit in the ballroom scene my wife said “what’s going on” and I said “she’s special or some shit” she replied “it looks like they are all ‘special’ in this”. Then Geralt quaffs a potion and starts moving and she goes “why’s he doing that?”, “to make him extra special” I replied and that kind of summed it all up, nonsense.
Then the yen story (although there may well be repercussions) just seemed to be there just to show what witches can do.

I’ve enjoyed it so far but both of us looked at each other after and questioned wtf it was all about to each other, and she’s the one who usually stays switched on so something must have been wrong (although she’s been on hospital prescribed drugs this week).

    Anyway onwards and upwards.

Probably didn't help there was a different director every week, one person carrying it through from start to finish might have made it a little more coherent.

It is something I will rewatch, I am sure I missed tons

Ok so loads of room for improvement. Didn't follow the timelines at all. Loads of characters I've no idea who they are. Like porcupine man or magic sword guy or the magic lady that got killed in Episode 1 or the Elves.

However the main thrust of it is there's an evil army called Nilgaurd and they are the bad guys. Henry Cavill is a magical pest control ninja who sometimes gets magic eyes. Hot boobs is a super mage and main character and creepy eyes blonde girl is important because she does a scream like
    Sindel in Mortal Kombat.

Definitely keen for another season but hoping for some improvements.

Also all the Kings look super ghey.

Her hunchback form genuinely repulsed me, mainly cos of that stupid side mouth shit. Just shows, we're all one small improvement away from being quite pretty.

I didn't need forums to work it out, it seemed pretty clear to me.

My 66 year old immigrant dad followed it easily enough, English isn't his first language so step it up eurogamers. I tested him after episode 1 by asking him to recap what he saw and he covered all the important bits.

Questions he asked were things like "what is a witcher?" and "why is he different?"

Like I get the needing to go to a forum thing but that can be true for anything where you discover all the extra details that a casual viewer isn't necessarily going to notice. Like Geralt keeping Renfri's emblem or the symbology used in the episode intros themselves, or why his medallion has a wolf on it.

You should be able to get the basics: Monster Hunter meets Magic Woman and ends up fated to a Screaming Girl that someone is willing to go to all out war for. Why? Find out from season 2 where they cover the novel series.

I was pleased to see one scene of Gerald meditating.

Enjoyed it overall, it lacked a bit of exposition for someone unfamiliar about Witcher mechanics and the time line stuff was a bit under explained early on.

All the fight scenes were very well crafted. Looking forward to another series.

I'm not sure it needed exposition, my dad followed it well enough. Do we really need a scene where we bollock on about how "whats that potion blah blah blah?"

I’m sure hedgehog man was a dog man in the books, wonder why they changed it.

Because a dog man would look ridiculous, obviously.
