Finished the first event 1st in every race even though on the first lap of the final that dirty Fin Leppšlš spun me into turn two! Okay I'll stop the running commentary now. I realise I'm on the easy cars currently.

Was just thinking about how much I was enjoying new Zealand in the wet and how it sortof reminded me of going camping when a 1 left came out of nowhere and I landed in a field! Almost managed to turn round but got handed a 1 minute pen before I could complete my manourve...
Is the anyway to set dnf for a stage to be less harsh in a custom championship? Just getting one atm basically rules you out

Okay comfortably won my first rally cross career championship. So I bought an old cosworth and started a new rally championship. Lol well over twice the bhp I'm used to and rear wheel drive, damn that was bad. I finished the first stage with minimal damage but 3rd to last place :). Spent the whole time trying to tame the back end.

I don't think I could walk round Argentina without banging my head on something let alone get a four door saloon through unscathed!
Found myself wishing I'd picked a smaller car once I'd got it nicely wedged in middle of the road

I know exactly which bit you mean- I was a third of a tired width away from doing the same.

Nope, can't do it. Quit the championship and sold the cosworth, zero fun to drive..even tapping the throttle kicks out the back end.

Then purchased a new fiesta and gone from 16th moody quit in the cos to an easy first in the fiesta..clearly I need to work on my rwd.

I've been trying the rwd every so often, despite making abit of progress elsewhere I've no idea what you're sposed to do to get one round a corner. Separate acceleration and steering more or something?

RWD definitely is an acquired taste. I love it because you can control your entire way through a corner without even thinking about steering. But it does need some practice. It's very rewarding imo, but you will need to invest some practice.

Bloody hell this is a toughie about to finish my 2nd championship, looking at 26th-28th again! No matter how hard I try, I think Iíve pulled off a perfect stage only to find Iím in position 20something (again!).. must do better, but no idea how, my lil Ford Escort is spruced to the hilt but no joy.. obviously itís my shite driving!
Will keep plugging away tho, absolute stunner of a game!

    @bighairybear65

One thing that I reckon helped me settle into alot was using the co driver calls to decide my road positioning. Getting onto the right if a left turn is coming up etc. Then stages became alot less hectic to survive and I even keep my headlights on occasionally for the night stages!

@mudskipp cheers shall try that, I think I generally struggle with the structure of the game too, for example new rally, 1st stage.. I sometimes do a cracking run, to me Iíve made no mistakes and at the finish line I may come in top three! Wooop! Then it prints up the stage results and no Iím still back down in the twentries, obviously all other cars have done theyíre run and my attempt was mediocre, but I canít see myself improving. Maybe for third championship Iíll get a more modern vehicle, try that.
Also I canít work out the point of the game? Sounds weird I know but is it just and endless string of championships or is there a goal as in Driveclub, Grid etc? It doesnít make the single player campaign very clear.
As I said having moaned, I still absolutely love it, best racer this gen.

@bighairybear65 regarding the last point, the eventual purpose as I see it is to get your cars and team advanced well enough to compete with the community events.

You should try the more modern cars, for sure, RWD is very tough in comparison to the 2000 era cars or R2 or something. You can test drive the cars, I think, so take some for a spin. Time trial is good too.

The main advice would be to use throttle and gear combinations and try to adjust your speed earlier than you are and turn in earlier and accelerate when the corner is completed. This will tidy things up. Essentially, brakes mean you are out of control so their use should be minimised where possible. Most 1, 2 and 3 corners require brakes but many four corners can be navigated without brakes.

Also, mess around with your pad/wheel settings, I was having real trouble with DR2 until someone on here posted some settings and they were spot on.

Further to the gear point, it really helps to get used to using manual gears. It becomes very useful when adjusting speed and traction. I have saved many a potential time penalty by switching down a gear and using the extra traction and power to correct things.

Another thing, try cadence braking, often it is the wheels locking up that lead to disaster so if you are going to fast into the corner quickly jam the brakes on and off and you are unlikely to lock up.

Also, worth checking your inputs are working properly. I checked mime on my ageing Dual Shock and discovered Iíd only got 70% braking. Sadly, that didnít turn out to be the reason I was shit.

^this made me chuckle (and check my input..)

    @Mr_Sleep
I gave manual gears a go and did find it a nice way to get round a couple stages, but I can't seem to map reverse to a sequential/h set up. I want forward gears changing sequentially but reverse on immediately with a specific button. Thought the options would allow this on a pad but doesn't seem to work. Have you got reverse accessed sequentially?

My driving style (frequently spinning round and backing out of ditches) needs reverse to be easy access

@mudskipp it seems like you are planning for now, rather than the future. Believe in your inner rally driving hero. The person who goes flat out at every opportunity. The kind of person who can Scandinavian flick through a hairpin. The kind of hero you have inside you, just waiting to be unleashed into the wet and miserable gravel of Wales.

    /music swells

    Believe.

Anyway, as you become better you very rarely need reverse. Within sequential it is fairly easy as one can just keep down shifting until one finds reverse.

Oh and another thing, start turning off hud elements. It helps with concentration, the co-driver is all that is required. That and practice.

I like your optimism. Also have a hankering for a Guinness.

I'll give it a go abit more but it's gonna take a step up from this..
    https://youtu.be/A1AOmzzs6e8

(though I guess technically reverse gear was not required in this example)

Good man. Manual gears add much to the experience. If you are going to hit the brake then do it early and coast through the corner. Late braking is almost always going to lead to spinning or a crash.

This manual gears thing is actually quite cool. Makes me think about stretches of road more like I would if driving round the dales.
Hammering downshift and looking out for my reverse lights has largely solved my reverse gear problem too.

Recently got back into this and did the latest EG rally championship today.
Manual gears and bumper cam for me, clean view so I can see what I'm going to hit before its even happened.
