You guys all wear a crash helmet too right?
I used to wear my motorcycle helmet, but to be honest the chin piece was annoying and so I switched to a bicycle helmet. It probably goes against safety regulations but I just hope I won't get caught.

As a Lancia driver, I probably won't have to worry though. They were supposed to make stable roll cages but thanks to smart interpretation of the rules and some slight concealment they got away with making their entire cars out of cardboard. At Lancia, fuel tank safety meant seating the driver on an incendiary bomb. That alone killed a few people, so I think they won't mind my helmet.

That seems reasonable. Iíll hold off on calling the police then.

OMG the new super-RWD cars are already there! I'll take them for a spin (ha ha) and let you know how it went.

So the Opel Manta is surprisingly friendly. I seriously recommend it to anyone who's struggling with RWD, it's great.

The BMW M1 is a different matter. It's basically a Stratos with +170HP. Slightly less oversteering, but still it just wants to bite your head off. Basically suicide. Loving it!

Iím guessing itís just PC players getting them a day early again, so us console plebs will have to wait until tomorrow.

I have only brief flashes of liking RWD cars, but Iím looking forward to giving them a go.

imo the Manta is easier to control than any other RWD car so far, so definitely try it.

I just had a go in the Manta and youíre right, it is fairly easy to control. Gave it one go round and didnít even crash it, although I was taking it fairly easy.

The BMW seemed surprisingly manageable too actually. Certainly neither of them are as bonkers as the Stratos.

Yeah gave it another try today (sober this time) and it's not nearly as bad as it was yesterday. Still finding it difficult to finish a stage without a crash because it's so fast. Really like it though.

As for the Stratos, I dug a little into tuning and the main problem is that by default it's set up for extreme oversteer, it looks like they wanted to almost max that out.

Tinkered around a bit and found these settings best if you'd like to drive a much more stable Stratos: Differential -> 40%, 40%, 80Nm.

I might try those settings out later. God knows why anyone would want to deliberately set up a car to be that twitchy as stock.

Saying that, itís pretty handy in Argentina in its default state because youíre not worrying about keeping it stable in a straight line very often.

Probably because they wanted it to reflect the character of the original car. That was designed from the ground up to blitz through tight corners and hairpins, so it makes some sense I guess. I think Argentina is indeed a good example of why you'd do that.

Itís certainly a good test case for messing about with tuning, considering the default for anywhere other than Argentina just isnít up to it. Iíve found it has a habit of just swerving off course in a fairly straight line at speed on the other tracks.

Iíve messed about with tuning it too and managed to get top of tier 2 on last weekís weekly Monaco H3 event with it. Previously Iíd have expected tier three or four!

Canít remember exactly what Iíve changed it to, but did mess around with the diff and, lengthened the gears, and dropped the final drive down to the minimum.

It canít hit its top speed that way, but itís much less of a handful for most tracks.

I just tried these settings on the Stratos and wow, what a diffference. I just lopped a good 30 seconds off a PB on Ocean Beach Sprint Forward (NZ) because I was able to control it so much better.

Iíd lowered the Driving and Breaking locks a bit before, but I think the real key for me was upping the Preload by so much. Great tip!

I have a feeling the Stratos was by default set up for Monte Carlo, it works really well there imo. Surprisingly smooth compared to how it fares on gravel. Extreme oversteer does help in those tarmac hairpins, low preload also helps when sliding through them, and high driving lock seems to help on snow/ice. But this setup is so aggressive that it becomes suicidal on gravel.

Iíve been driving the Manta a fair bit and I really like it. If only this had been my first RWD experience, then I might have put more time in with them.

Iím itching to try my wheel again. I havenít even touched it for a few days because Iím waiting for the stand to arrive at the weekend.

A Wheelstand Pro. It seems to have lots of recommendations online, including from you guys.

Yeah that's what I've got, can't fault it. Make sure to pick up another game on the cheap as well to see what these wheels can really do. Half the effects aren't working properly on Dirt 2 yet. I'd recommend Assetto Corsa. GT Sport is pretty good as well if you're on PS4. The latest F1 is decent as well.

Yeah I picked up a copy of Assetto Corsa second hand for £8 yesterday for that very reason.

My girlfriend has some vague idea Iíll be able to teach her to drive now Iíve got all this kit. Training in Dirt Rally should yield some interesting driving from her on the local roads.

Apart from Project Cars, which is best not recommended by me, my first choice on the wheel would definitely be Dirt Rally 1. Really handles nicely with the wheel and great feedback. Plus some great courses from Wales and Greece. Also is quite cheap every now and then.

Yes I was thinking about getting the first Dirt Rally too. Then Iíll know for sure what the complaints about force feedback are all about.

Would also recommend the Playseat over the Wheelstand Pro if itís in a permanent slot. But obviously the Wheelstand is the best option if you need to fold and put away each time.

I think the playseat is pushing it a bit far for me. I definitely want/need the option to be able to stash it away.

I bet they feel great to sit and make broom broom noises in though.

3:06.640, had to have another couple of goes as 1st seemed possible. Obviously not many people are time trialing in the mini.
