Again if you remove Zelda, Mario Kart, Bayonetta and Splatoon from the list (all of which I had on the Wii U) its been very lean.

If people are happy to pay over the odds for mobile games to play on the Switch thsts fine. It's not something I understand. It's also not going to sell consoles.

Now they are working on a newer version of the Switch. It's a repeat of history.
Two years ago you could have copied and pasted in PlayStation 4, AAA games, Assassins Creed, Fifa, Battlefield, Call of Duty, GTA, Uncharted, Spider Man, and Last of Us.

It's a pretty similar situation. The PS4 was selling well on the back of repeated titles from older generations and was releasing a revised 'slim' system.

The Switch is still on path to hit its sales targets and that puts it on pace with the PS4 during the same time in its life. 3rd party support continues to grow as sceptics begin playing catch up and indie developers are selling millions on the platform. More than on other consoles and even steam.

It might not sell as well as the PS4 at the end of the day, but its still going rather well at the minute and the support is only increasing.

Indeed, and these cynical, exaggerated myths of systems only offering a handful of franchises or genres are only good for talking yourself out of enjoying a system, you have to dig a little deeper than the games that are shoved in your face. My brother loves his PS4 and he hasn't played any of the above titles on it.

Though of course if those expected franchises weren't there people would be up in arms about the lack of those games to validate their purchase. People have moaned the lack of a 3D Mario game at system launch since the Gamecube.

Well Nintendo are really the only guys in town with true one system only franchises - bar the dip into iOS with mario / Pokemon no Zelda , mario kart etc will ever be on a rival system like ps or ms. If Nintendo can lower the price the price of entry with a revised Switch I can see it easily selling to those other console owners who don’t already own one as it truly offers a major point of difference in its portability to the other big two.

From 2017 E3 "At Microsoft’s big E3 conference yesterday, most of the game trailers were preceded by a booming voice uttering the word “EXCLUSIVE.” In truth, not a single game announced at the show was actually exclusive to the Xbox One. In fact, each time the announcer said the word, it often meant something different than the last time he said it.

Nebulous exclusivity is not a new thing in video games—we’ve been talking about it for years. Game companies have always been cagey about whether something is truly exclusive. Good exclusive software can help encourage people to buy one game console over a competing one, and even if a console maker doesn’t have many exclusives, they want you to think they do."

    Kotaku June 2017

CNET has also said "one of the biggest decisions when choosing a video game system has to be the exclusive games. The focus of E3 on exclusive titles at each publishers demonstration also reflects the marketing power of exclusive titles, in addition to exclusive hardware.

    @YYDeckard

You’re digging deeper into that hole mate. There’s clearly exclusives on other systems - Halo/Forza/God of War.

Though there’s some bleed between Xbox and PC these days, there’s still some games that are either on Sony or Microsoft. So what you’re saying isn’t really true.

And also even though Nintendo arguably has a lot of exclusives to its own systems, it also misses out on a huge number of titles that are available on the other consoles and PC because it’s worfully underpowered.

To say it’s the only place where there are exclusives is cobblers.

I like digging - Mario Kart has been an exclusive for what , 26 years now.... Metroid 24, Mario well 33 years etc etc etc

I didn't really know much about Sony as I only have a vita but two secs googling said they had a few big franchises and MS like zero these days as they cross contaminate with the PC.

I suppose I am saying that with the cross bleed of the other 3 - PS4 , Xbox and PC that nothing is certain when it comes to exclusives but if you want anything in the Nintendo canon then it has to be their hardware.

Its perfectly powered for what is it - a hybrid portable console. Please feel free MS and Sony if you think you can do better...oh look they've just stopped making the Vita and have no further plans in that area. Nintendo have never been beaten in the handheld market.

Plus what does "Nintendo arguably has a lot of exclusives to its own systems" -how are its system exclusives arguably not ?

I’m actually surprised it’s such an issue if some game is not only on Xbox but on Windows as well. They’re both MS platforms and they’ve been making strides to make them as one for years now, so what’s the big deal? You have to be an MS customer to play some games, it’s pretty exclusive.

Sony is another matter, and so is Nintendo.

My meds have worn off and I am back - didn't realise Xbone sales were so poor...

"During the month of July 2018, the Switch outsold the PS4 by 45,906 units for the month and the Xbox One by 483,534 units. The PS4 outsold the Xbox One by 437,628 units.

When you compare monthly sales to a year ago, the Xbox One and Switch are up, while the PS4 is down. The Xbox One is up 82,919 units, the Switch is up 128,903 units, and the PS4 is down 423,554 units.

Taking a look at the marketshare, the Switch managed to achieve 43 percent. The PS4 accounted for 40 percent of the consoles sold, and the Xbox One 17 percent.

    PlayStation 4 Monthly Sales: 748,452

    Xbox One Monthly Sales: 310,824

    Switch Monthly Sales: 794,358"

And this is pre-the-two-sales-juggernauts that Poke and Smash will be...

I reckon the Switch will catch up to Xbox one sales by the end of next year ? I'd wager my slippers on it.
