We didn't get beyond a single session!

I'm DMing my regular group through Princes of the Apocalypse. Using the 'event based levelling' method, which we like as a group. They're up to 8th level and are enjoying all the new skills they get. As DM I'm struggling at times to run the combat encounters to still provide them a challenge..

@Alastair run the combat like I did in Ravenloft. When they hit, don't say 'you did 24 hp' instead describe what they did to the mob while you note the collective damage. That allows you to be very imaginative as to how strong the creature is. You can kill it earlier or later as required. Also don't describe it as a goblin, call it a small green creature with wicked eyes armed with an old but very sharp looking scimitar which is crusted with blood. They may think 'its a goblin' but they're never certain.

The above just makes the players a lot less sure if what is going on and how much of a threat anything they meet is. Plenty more like that you can do to add in uncertainty.

Or curse or rob or poison your players to weaken them and make them face a challenge again.

PotA can be a bit of a clusterfuck. Especially when your group learns how to activate a devastation orb and decides to hold a city to ransom.

Has anyone else managed to make their children cry by killing off Meepo?

There has been a reprinting of the Maze of the Blue Medusa.

Very tempted to get this work of art.

From a bunch of YouTube videos I've seen over the last few months D&D seems like a miniatures game more than an RPG.

    Am I being lied to?

Yep. You don't need minatures at all to play d&d.

The latest version of the D&D rules, released a few years ago (5th edition) streamlined combat quite a lot, and removed the need for any tabletop mats, grids etc.

You can still use them if you like, but it can all be done either in the mind or with rough supporting sketches of locations, positions. Quite a few people use small whiteboard markers for that purpose.

Utterly insane bundle at the moment on Bundle of Holding for Halloween for the game Shadow of the Demon Lord.

This is my go to system over the last 12 months. Brilliantly designed kind of D & D fantasy meets Call of Cthulhu horror game. Its nuts.

The bundle for $20 gives you access to the core rule book and pretty much every major supplement released for the system.

SOTDL is a fun system, though a bit difficult to get your head around as not as many people talking about it. Which is a shame.

Its been slowly building a following. There is now an official discord server and Roll 20 have finally added it to searchable games. The problem as always is a lack of people willing to GM.

/stops self from buying Shadow of the Demon Lord by pointing out to self the other rules systems that are to date unread.

    That was a close one...
