Black iphone 12 next friday for me, site went wonky for a bit, I think theyíve sold a lot. Should be nice upgrade from a 7 plus. My biggest worry is having to give up touch id, especially now with all the facemask wearing we have to do.

Yeah, touch id would be great, if they bring it back I will probably get one.

Yep, as an X owner, having to type the passcode in all the time when out is bloody annoying.

You would hope iris scanning is on the horizon.

Also, the iPhone 11 launch last year was a fucking nightmare, so I would prepare for a wait. Nowhere seemed to get enough stock.

Got me the blue Pro arriving next Friday. Was tempted to wait for the Max but with the combination of iPads we have lying around a larger screen isnít really worth it.

I think the under screen fingerprint scanner like on the one+ phones would be nice.
Or maybe just a software option for facemasks where you accept that it will be less secure?

They won't lower the security. Apple has prided itself on how secure it all is, and too many corps rely on it. I know in our setup we can use Face ID on MAM/MDM devices because it passed the mustard test with our cyber team, but don't have the same with Android, partially because of the wild inconsistencies across devices and how generally insecure it is, with the possible exception of the latest Pixel phones.

The most they'll do is what they've already done - mask detection that results in a faster passcode prompt.

Its that line of thought which means they would never support geofencing, either. Which is a shame as I, basically, just go to the same three places outside my house these days.

I have never used faceID, what would happen if you did the initial setup with a mask on?

It would probably tell you to take the mask off.

Don't think it would work. You'd end up using just a passcode instead.

Seems it kind of works if you fudge it, but given they say it makes it wildly inconsistent there's almost no point.

Hu, what's the alternate appearance option anyway? For when you're wearing glasses?

I think it must be for another person. Its a 3D camera that looks at facial contours rather than recognising just a flat picture, which is why it wont recognise you with a mask. Its actually kind of amazing. It unlocks with or without glasses, with beard, without beard, with moustache, without and in pretty much pitch darkness. It works amazingly well.

Yeah, that FaceID worked so freaking well the first iteration and they've literally never had to update it (save for a mask detecting tweak) is pretty impressive, especially considering how many iterations it took for Android to eventually get something that isn't fooled by a low res photo.

I nearly backed out and then though fuc£ it and went for a Blue 12 pro, pick up from the store next Sat and the clear MagSafe case.

My Green 11pro got a decent trade in via Apple but may try and sell as itís in absolute mint condition. Iíve not even taken the charger and cable out of the box so could possibly get more.

Either way the wife doesnít yet know...(I seem to have done this a lot lately..)

I sold my 11 Pro for 650 today
Back to my old Pixel 2 for a bit as I want the Max

ps are you guys forgetting Apple just added a different fingerprint scanner to the new iPad air?

Would have been ideal to have face unlock in addition to the power button being a scanner

Apple went through many iterations as well, the only difference is they simply decided not to ship them until the feature didn't suck anymore.

As 120Hz screens and Touch ID were the only things I was looking forward to, I'm kinda glad both were a no-show. Makes the decision not to upgrade easier.

Rumours are that the next iPhone might even have an under-screen Touch ID, although I doubt that they can acheive the same precision and speed.

If they drop faceID theyíll need another design quirk though. Like right now you can still easily recognise an iphone, if itís just one big screen like all the other phones you canít. I can see them keep faceID until their foldable phone is ready.

They won't drop Face ID. When you're not wearing a mask it is superior, as you don't need to touch or press something in a specific way with a specific finger.

WRT recognisability: I don't think Apple cares about that, at least not for the front. You can't recognise an iPad Pro from its front either, it's just a rectangular screen. The logo on the back is what other people can see if you use their mobile devices.

Yeah, Face ID definitely isnít going away. Itís more secure and easier to engineer in an increasingly buttonless world. Theyíll probably just end up doing both if they go that route. Getting Touch ID into the iPad Air was apparently insanely complicated, and inscreen sensors are still pretty unreliable and slow, especially when you start putting on screen protectors. Itíll get there at some point.

    Yay! \o/

Incremental updates are all we can expect these days. Itís not like we need to upgrade every year, though Apple does force one to eventually as they take features away. IDK what itís like on Android.
