You can't update the new Mac Mini Ram so 8gb it is. It is meant to be blindingly fast though. I didn't order a screen. I'm going to use one of my pc monitors |

I talked to a guy who design chips for a living and came away being not so surprised anymore. AS I understood it Apple just ignore a lot of legacy shit and backwards compatibility.
I find it pretty amazing that I’m certain tasks it can keep up with (even outperform) a £15K Mac Pro. They’ve got certain codecs on metal though which makes a massive difference.
But then I started thinking about how the new chip runs un optimised code almost as well as optimised and I felt that I don't understand anything about chip architecture again
I will talk to him some more in the future because it was really interesting to hear what he had to say. Also on why they don't just build another machine that makes the 8nm chips (or whatever nanometer it is that no one but that one factory can make).
The look he gave me before opening with "It's a 1800 hectare earthquake proof compound..." -

Registered 10 years agoArse, another month for it to arrive.
The annoying thing is that I saw the same model available a few days ago online at the same price, rather than immediately ordering and cancelling the delayed order, I gave these chumps a chance and now the other place is out of stock with long lead time. -

Registered 17 years agoNice. That was a long wait. Did you order extra RAM/SSD?
I'm ordering my M1 13" MacBook Pro in the next couple of days. Fully hit on that including the 2TB SSD. Hopefully won't have to wait too long. -

Yeah, thought it was never going to come, I ordered 16GB/1TB. My Mac mini is 1.0TB also so can stick all files on iCloud Drive and have both machines pretty synchronised.

I didn't order from Apple, a local retailer had them with 10% off so that was the cause of the wait. -

Registered 17 years agoI didn't see the point in getting a 1+TB drive in it; I got a 1Tb external T5 for much less than the difference for direct access to video files and saved the money on getting a 16Gb / 512Gb pro... Realistically I'd sell it in two years for a 14, so putting a £600+ drive upgrade in feels like a way to lose money.
I should probably do a video whine about the stuff that is somewhat surprising about it, like how it pretends to be responsive or when you open it while wearing pyjamas the hinge will bite you. -

Registered 10 years agoFirst impressions of my MBA are great, super responsive, no noise whatsoever, apart from the too late bezels, it seems close to the perfect small laptop. Touch ID is great too.
First app I've came across that needs Rosetta is the WhatsApp desktop client. -
I'd be interested in any heat issues. My 2013 MBP which still moves at a decent lick, run so hot doing anything of note. It actually wrecked my coffee table with how hot it ran. -

I think it also fits the MBA. It's pretty good, would recommend. -

Is that a velcro fastening?
Edit: I scrolled down, no need to answer!

Went for it. Ordered 13" MBP with 16G and 2TB SSD. I know external storage etc. but it's a real pain with something with only two slots. A lot more convenient and (at the moment) a lot more faster than external SSD. Seems to be a Big Sur problem in that area but I'm sure it'll get fixed. I couldn't really wait for a 14" or 16" but next item on the list is a monster of an iMac in December.
Super excited to get hold of this. So much more I'll one able to do on this than my ageing 2017 i7 iMac. It'll burn through rendering times, I can finally start using 3D camera tracking etc. -

Registered 15 years agoBeen having issues with the B key on my MacBook Pro recently. Contacted Apple only to discover that they've been replacing the keyboards for 4 years now free of charge, but it ended last month. Now they want £650.

I would push them, they can often stretch the rules, insist you buy other apple gear, loyal customer etc.

Registered 14 years ago@Wayne Did you purchase the MacBook in the UK? If so, they should hopefully be able to replace the keyboard under consumer law which can cover up to 6 years. I'd politely ask them to do that if possible.

Registered 17 years agoGoy my M1 13" MBP today. 16G RAM and 2TB SSD. It's really quite remarkable. Lovely, lovely laptop. Typing this up now on it. I've never had one with a touch bar. I really like it but not used it much. Last MBP I had was the 17" beast with the DVD drive built into it.
I've not started pushing it just yet but it's super quite and battery life is pretty good. I've been using it all day since about 10am and it's on 41%.
Ran into a few problems with M1 compatibility for FCP plug-ins but I expected that. I still need my iMac for certain things due to being intel and having a lot more ports but it's fucking fabulous so far. Despite the trackpad locking up on setup and forcing me to do a hard reset. That was a bit scary/annoying.
Got the next couple of days off to mess around with this. I've got 15 hours worth of tutorials to get through from Ripple training for starters.
Edit: Also super cool and silent.

I got the gold one and really like the colour as it changes a lot depending on the light.
Less bezels and better webcam would be perfection. -
Can it play crysis?
