I can pass about one mince pie a year, all in the name of “getting in the spirit of things” and everytime I end up thinking wtf is this shit. They do vary a bit though depending on quality of pastry and peel to other shit ratio.

Hmmm, I can't join the hate.
I like mince pies and Christmas pudding.
Don't like Christmas Cake though, or heavy fruit cake in general.

They say you should make a wish when you eat your first mince pie of the year. Which I think would be "I wish I wasn't eating this mince pie"

I wish Pete will give me the rest of his mince pies (not including the one he just took a bite of)

Get out with your filthy EU stollen. Panettone too. British mince pies all the way.

I made a decent Christmas pudding once. The secret was the quantity of brandy I used. So ok, it was basically brandy with a few raisins floating in it.

Yeah Christmas pudding is doable if I'm really pissed and it's soaked in Brandy.

I tried making actual beef mince pies one year instead of this fruit nonsense, they were loads better.

Christmas and fruit cake, also goes in the “we are not living in fucking Charles Dickens style squalor” anymore.

Panettone however is actually pretty lovely with some thick cream.

As a dirty foreigner I had to google what these are. I’ve had dried fruit in a cake before, but to be honest the pictures I saw of this do not look very appetising.

I think the general rule of thumb is that if you don't eat it for the other 51 weeks a year, it's because it's shit.

Quite. I give you roast turkey - why do we bother?

I'll tell you why we bother. Because bossy sisters-in-law INSIST that we MUST have turkey and shut down all discussion.
Because I am second (or third) nicest forumite and don't like to argue with it, I just accept it as I prefer a quiet life.

I grew up thinking turkey was a rubbish meat because my mother is a terrible cook. So we'd only have turkey at Christmas and it would inevitably be completely unseasoned and cooked to the point where its meat had the texture of balsa wood.

Since I started doing the Christmas cooking myself, I've learned that it can actually be quite nice, cooked properly. I sometimes even have it when it isn't Christmas.

I've been dishing out some of these in the office today. The new Walkers crisps in Christmas flavours. One of them being Brussel Sprouts. Taste like shite. The Turkey and stuffing was okay though, reminded me of a tin of Heinz Chicken soup.
