Sony Interactive Entertainment, currently riding high on record sales of its PlayStation 4 gaming console wonít be hosting its annual press conference or showing up at all during next yearís massive E3 expo.

The news was buried inside the Entertainment Software Associationís announcement of the 2019 show that quoted competitors Nintendo and Microsoft.

This will be the first time in E3ís 24-year history that PlayStation will not be attending the event, it is also the second major PlayStation event canceled by the company in recent months.

A very interesting turn of events. Wonder what it could mean for E3 as a whole.

    The end of E3, maybe..

I stopped staying up trying to watch the conferences a few years ago, I now just skip through the announcements the following day. I think individual events for each of the platforms is a better way to go, why bother trying to compete against anyone.

E3 feels like a bloated mess anyway. Probably more hassle than it's worth in a lot of ways.

Why is there a need to announce everything at once? Used to be pretty cool but now itís just meh.

Potentially skipping for their own event for a PS5 announcement...?

It might be a timing issue, as in they have a plan for PS5, that wouldnt work at E3, and as a bonus they can see what MS plan to do.

Hopefully they will announce some games. Or maybe another new controller to play nothing with.

I think a lot of developers are now working on PS5 games and Sony will have next to nothing to show at E3. Why turn up if you'd put on a crap show and just get complaints?

I still rather enjoy E3, but I always have to skip the Sony conference because it's on at 2am. So no great loss from a European standpoint.

E3 was great when you had a magazine a month and could do a special on the event.

These days with 24 news feeds etc I don't see the point.

I like E3 because itís like Christmas in July, I especially like Giant Bombís content during that time. On the other hand I can totally understand companies wanting to do their own event so they donít have to share the press with literally everyone else. And in these days of live streams there is very little point to actually going to the conferences.

Given how infrequent and (imo) not very good Microsoft exclusives are, I can't see E3 lasting beyond next year. As others have said, it's a fucking mess these days. Bethesda events, Ubisoft events, Devolver events Sony events, Microsoft events, Square events... Bollocks to that.

I wouldn't be surprised if E3 itself skips next year. It's going to be a dry year anyway with next gen around the corner, and I'm sorry but MS, alone, on a dry year is not worth the bother.

Unless they announce first before E3 :)
