Registered 3 years agoMings is a terrific human being off the pitch (sometimes a terrific shithouse on it).
His career path has been extraordinary. I watched his first game for us - a friendly at Crawley - and he was appalling. That season he went from "probably an athlete but no real football nous" to "crikey he's amazing, maybe losing Cresswell won't be too bad" towards the end. And then by the start of the next season he was so good it was a matter of time before we got a big offer in.
So glad he's doing well -

I get that. Hopefully my post was clear that I'm in agreement with your wider point. The age thing was an aside.

He shouldn't have to, was my point. The age is really not the takeaway message I wanted to make. He shouldn't have had to have media training (etc), he's been put into the limelight by racist press and the do-gooders equally by having him have to feel like he was some kind of standard bearer for black players.
Completely agree with the above comments on the depressing scenes at last night's match. Seems like a hefty exclusion for the national team might be the only proper deterrent.
Picking up on fontgeeksogood's aside:

I ask my own aside:
The focus on Sterling is so unfair, as an aside. There will again be a load of press questions for him. He's just a fucking 24 year old kid who plays football, the expectation for him to "represent black players" is, in itself, racist.
Ahh, football, you utter cunt
Are you still a "kid" at 24? I find it weird that professional footballers of all ages are still seen as youngsters. Fair enough for the teenagers who are new on the scene, but a 24-year-old person is an adult by any measure.
That's not to say Sterling hasn't had to deal with more shit than any person should - he has, thanks to some sections of our despicable press - but he's hardly a child. That fact that he's stood up to tackle the issue on his own terms shows his maturity.
Racism in football is insidious -

Heh. I sort of get your (jokey) point, but that's the kind of thought process that sees retirees saying their opinion is more valid because they're older...
When I was 24 I was not a kid. Now that I am 38, I know I was a kid when I was 24.gif)

I'm sure it will change the square sum of fuck all over there. Their own manager "Couldn't hear anything" FFS. -

Registered 15 years agoIt’s damage limitation to limit action taken against them clearly. Thing is action is somewhat pointless anyway. They’re not qualifying for any tournaments anytime soon. -

Registered 12 years agoThey are one of the poorest sides I've seen in a long time, and I have to watch United every week.
Any nations guilty of this should be barred from playing any International fixtures for a period of time IMO. No qualifying, no friendlies, no exposure for them or their players whatsoever. Even then it probably won't stop it happening in some places. Fucked up. -

I was surprised to see the manager suggesting he couldn't hear any racism and that all he could hear was English supporters calling Bulgaria supporters unacceptable names .

Registered 16 years agoI think we all know they'll be pretty similar. UEFA can't risk setting a harsh precedent that they'd have to stick to next time Italian or Spanish fans decide to racially abuse someone. -

Registered 16 years agoYeah, I’ve been hearing that all day, along with the brilliant excuse that, with a zero tolerance, kick them out approach, international football could be brought to its knees by a single roving band of determined racists.
Which, to be honest, with the way the world is now is exactly the kind of thing you could see springing out of 4chan for a laugh. -

Well, that happened.
Good to see Abraham get his goal. Game was essentially over at half time so pretty pleased they managed to score another couple.
Good way to put that last result to bed and the hoo ha over Sterling.
Looking forward to having my dreams dashed next year. -
