    Hi guys,

    I kinda bought myself a new gaming laptop for Xmas, a friend at work pursuaded me after a good 15 years of console only gaming.

    Can you chaps recommend a few games to get me going?

    Really want to get into strategy games - real time and turn based.
    Simulation games, FPS, RPGs new and old.

    Itís a high performance job so graphics and overall power isnít a problem.

    Many thanks in advance!

    As a first stop, maybe try Battletech - the 2018 version. It's a turn-based strategy game only available on PC. Accessible enough for beginners to get into, but with some seriously hardcore mechanics lurking just below the surface.

    XCom and its sequel are also available on consoles, but the PC versions are very much the way to go. In fact, check out the old 1990s games (the first two, at least), which are available for pennies.

    Or as an alternative to that, take a look at Xenonauts. It's a spiritual successor to the original XCom (not the Firaxis remakes) that ports it to fairly a modern, if barebones engine and gives a few quality of life improvements.

    But the great granddaddy of PC strategy gaming is the Total War series. Of the historical titles, Shogun 2 is the best recent one (though next year's Three Kingdoms looks spiffy). But the Warhammer games are where the really good stuff is at. Total War: Warhammer and its sequel are probably the best grand-strategy games around right now. cdkeys will sell you the first title for £14.99 and I've seen it cheaper than that in seasonal sales. The second remains quite pricey - quality games tend to hold their value.

    Witcher 3 really shines on PC if you've not played it. Also either of the Divinity games for a bit of turn-based action.

    @Rogueywon

    Thanks Roguey Battletech looks right up my alley, will check some reviews out for that.
    Iíve played both xcoms on console but they are pretty bad with lag and frame rate. Would love to play those again without all that.
    I did have a crack in Rome 2 which I thought was great so Iíll check out the newer Total Wars.
    Looking at the old Fallout games also.
    Is Wasteland 2 a good time on PC? I bought it on console and itís pretty ropey.

    @Blackmarsh63

    Indeed, Iíve been looking at the divinity games myself. Bought the first one on console but it just doesnít feel right. Pretty expensive on Steam though, may have to wait for a sale

    Thanks for the heads up

    @MadCaddy13 Battletech is great. Hardcore as hell once you scratch the surface (prepare to save-scum), but an absolutely awesome turn based tactics game.

    I'm playing Wasteland 2 on PC at the moment. It felt pretty clunky for the first few hours but kinda got used to it.

    From what I played on the PS4 I really enjoyed it when it wasnít bugging out so Iíll for sure get back to it. Hopefully it performs much better on PC

    @MadCaddy13 The Steam winter/Christmas sale starts on the 20th so you might bag a few bargains. GOG will be doing the same I imagine.

    Most of these games are available on console too, but they're my favourite games as a PC player, so here goes anyway. Plus, playing those games at 60fps or more makes quite a difference, and makes you proud of being elite.

    Action-RPG-FPS: Borderlands 2 (wait for Steam sale)
    RTS: Starcraft 2
    Turn-based: Civ 5 with expansions (wait for Steam sale, I believe - haven't played Civ 6 a lot so can't say much about that)
    Racing sim: Dirt Rally (wait for Steam sale, there's probably a good one coming before the launch of DR2 in February) - only recommended playing with controller or wheel though
    2D indie: Binding of Isaac Rebirth, Terraria
    RPG: Skyrim, Witcher 3 (not a huge fan of W3 myself, but since a large majority thinks it's super awesome, I'll put it here anyway)
    Frantic action FPS: Doom 2016
    First person puzzle: Portal 1+2
    Similar to GTA but actually fun: Saints Row The Third
    Chillout RTS (not many like this a lot, it's really slow, relaxed and pretty easy most of the time, but nice when "smoking" or drinking): Eufloria
    Tactical FPS: Counter-Strike Global Offensive
    Arena FPS: Quake Champions (F2P I think) - not many players, but worth a try
    Classics: Doom 1/2 with zDoom (or similar - you'll need the original .WADs), Warcraft 3, Heroes of Might & Magic 3, Mass Effect series, Quake 3 Arena. I'd recommend Quake 1 but the soundtrack is essential and at least the Steam version lacks it.

    Iíve signed up to GOG who have offered me £18 for Witcher 3 GOTY, is ordering from GOG more beneficial than anywhere else because of the DRM thing? And should I wait for sale?

    @MadCaddy13

    It is definitely worth £18, it might go a bit lower but for the sake of a few quid I would buy it now.

    All of the Paradox strategy games.

    Stellaris, CK2, EUIV are all amazing.

    Endless Space 2 is also excellent.

    If you get into racing sims - Assetto Corsa, rFactor 2, the early access Assetto Corsa Competizione, Automobilista are all amazing. If you decide to take out another mortgage, iRacing is almost unbeatable as far as MP racing goes.

    Also Bethesda RPGs take on a new life on PC. Mount and Blade is really good fun too.
