So many good reviews for this game. I played the Wii version a few times but found the action hectic. I came away unsure. So I avoid the hype and spend my 50 quid eshop voucher on say, Katamari and Monster Boy?

    The reviews for SSBU though...

It's very good, but I've noticed there's quite a bit of input lag in this one.

Digital foundry say the extra input lag is equivalent to 2 frames. I guess if you're an experienced player you'll notice that, but I doubt most folk will notice or care.

Those two frame delays must be why I'm so crap at the game. Yes, that's the reason I'm sure of it.

Yeah it's the same game as always, I would use your money on something else if you didn't like it before

I have played all but the 3DS one. Loved the first but liked them less which each additional instalment and barely touched the Wii U one.

I think I have already played Ultimate more than Melee through U combined. (It is easily my favourite of the lot).

Always hated smash. Never got on with it for whatever reason. Eldest daughter wanted it so took the plunge and I've personally sunk around 10 hours into the World of Light mode and absolutely love it.

The actual gameplay has always been the same though.

That's the same with most fighting series (or any game series) though, so I won't hold that against it.

I'm still pretty fresh to the series, only really having played the previous one on 3ds. And I don't particularly love the core gameplay, but a decent single player mode goes a long way for me. And World of Light has (so far) been pretty great. It's fun despite me being a bit shit.

Indeed it has. Can't quite explain why I like this one so much. I think the WoL mode has helped me actually get into it more.

I'm not saying it's a bad game btw, just saying that someone that doesnt like the series and found it too hectic should probably hang on to their cash as it doesn't reinvent the wheel.

I didn't get on with early Smash games at all and this is my GOTY, but Melee/Brawl were played under different circumstances and my tastes have changed. The core gameplay is the same, especially at a casual level.

I have Melťe and Brawl but haven't played either much, they just didn't hook me like SoulCalibur. However, ultimate is fantastic and I'm playing for hours each day.

I wouldn't necessarily say that previous experience should guide you. My GOTY hands down.

So itís still essentially the same game and combat. Iíve been really enjoying the one player game though and it seems like Iím not the only one, so maybe it is worth another look for people who didnít bite before.

For me I think theyíve streamlined the classic mode - so each characterís story is pretty fun but crucially pretty short - maybe five minutes. So completing every characterís story is an achievable goal.

I enjoy the story mode - using the spirits adds a bit of variety. Then I mix this up with buying random shit on store, getting spirits from spirit board and playing online to get gold. Thereís just enough different things to do to ensure that you can put a few hours in and you still want to play.

The only thing that can do one is that stupid fucking laser beam mini game when youíve beaten a hard spirit. Just whatís the fucking point of that shit?

Anyway TLDR, itís still Smash but theyíve made a compelling one player challenge so maybe look at it again. Worst case scenario, buy physical and you can always sell it on eBay.

    @gizzaciggy shit. I missed a good joke:

    Smash or Pass on Smash?

See what I did there? Good, aren't I.

Haha! Yeah itís proper annoying. It doesnít help that every character Iíve unlocked isnít one Iím overly familiar with/ever want to play. Just give me Simon and Iíll be happy.

Down A from above repeatedly is a fairly easy cheese. Greninja is probably the most effective at that move as he bounces quite high but young Link would also work.

I beat him with Villager, abusing the gyro attack. Took a fair few goes though.

You could beat the entire Wii U game using donkey kongs ground smash, I would imagine it still works now. The ai just keeps walking or jumping into it, you will take the odd hit but nothing much.

It is not as effective as previously, the AI tends to counter it within 3 bounces. (I tried that cheese on a few of the harder Spirit Board matches). There are a few other cheeses though. Up A with young link is really effective on a few matches. (Particularly against King Krool...)

Equipping items in the prematch setup can be pretty useful. I didn't do this at all on WoL but the 50% health, weak minions and Health drain proved quite useful on some of the harder Spirit board matches.

I've put a few hours into this and while I'm generally enjoying myself I haven't got a fucking clue what's going on really. Has anyone got a link some kind of idiot's guide? I might end up buying the prima guide as it's not that expensive.

Arrekz has done some videos to explain how to play, they are nicely done and split into beginner, intermediate etc.

I'm getting bored of the adventur mode. I think I'm about half to three quarters of the way through and it seems like a chore. I think I'll focus on unlocking the rest of the characters rather than slogging through to the end. I prefer mucking about in Smash mode tbh.

It feels like the most accessible Smash Bros in years and I've gotten over the initial learning curve. I just wish that like many games, it wasn't so overstuffed with filler in the story mode.

Is it actually possible to get an online match in this that isn't laggy?

I've played without lag fine against friends, does it just priotise finding only players with the shittiest connections possible?

The thread title is correct, the game is literally unplayable.
