Sooooo, Obsidian have announced The Outer Worlds as their next game. From some of the peeps behind the original Fallout and also New Vegas. Amazing! Then they show a trailer of some sub-Borderlands type deal. Odd. I’m conflicted. Should be amazing. Doesn’t feel amazing. Fingers crossed! Some more info and trailers over at RPS. Excuse shitty link as I’m on mobile. https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/12/07/obsidian-entertainment-announce-the-outer-wilds/ |

Registered 8 years agoYeah, on paper it's right up my alley, but that reveal left me pretty cold too.
I really don't like Borderlands and this reminded me far too much of that, especially in the art style. -

Registered 17 years agoI loved me some Borderlands, but that was equal parts the humorous characters and the insane shooty bangs. Not sure a more traditional RPG with funny leanings is going to hit the mark.
But then maybe it’ll turn out more like a Mass Effect that won’t disappear up it’s own arse, and that gives me hope.

Registered 14 years agoI think this looks great. Albeit in the typically janky Obsidian way. I'm hoping it will be more Fallout than Borderlands though. -

Registered 13 years agoI'm guessing they signed a publishing deal before MS bought them. It's coming to PS4 too. -

Registered 17 years agoI'd imagine, given it's coming out in 2019, they signed a deal years and years ago.
Shame all I see over t'internet is people declaring "thank fuck they're leaving that isometric shit behind" because that makes me sad. I hope they keep that stuff ticking over, and continue to do interesting things with it like Tyranny.
That said, I'm glad this particular game isn't in the Infinity Engine stylee.

The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
Lead your companions: During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon. -

Take Two Interactive are publishing (they own Private Divsion) So I’m sure they have a deal for a sequel if it’s a big hit. -

Registered 12 years agoI wonder how that'll play with the Microsoft acquisition. They didn't buy them to have them making multiplatform games. I would imagine if they can't work out some kind of deal (Obsidian hold the IP, while T2 presumably keep the publishing rights), it'll probably end up being a one-off. -

Registered 10 years agoVery interested in this. I was expecting an isometric RPG, which I would have been happy with, but I'm excited it will be more like newer Fallout but with the RPG elements hopefully done better.
I have faith in Obsidian here and this has immediately become one of my most anticipated games for 2019. -

I thought I had heard on a free podcasts that obsidian owned it but when I searched I couldn't find a confirmation either way -

Registered 5 years agoReally looking forward to this. Love these types of games, shame we only get them once every few years.
The disappointment of Fallout 76 makes me crave it even more. -
I love it when a really interesting sounding game just comes out of nowhere. Or maybe I've just somehow not heard any rumours.
