| My Dad got through his operation ok, had a few scares since including irregular heart beats, bad blood pressure and a collapsed lung but I think we are past the worst of it. Finally got the tree up today but it's not feeling overly Christmassy yet. Got loads of nice food and booze though so that's something. |

Registered 16 years agoIn-laws arriving tomorrow also, usually fine as they can entertain the kids and I can take it easy. Also the wife’s cousin and husband and two kids and uncle coming for a few hours as well so some sort of late afternoon nibbles apparently.
Christmas Day is another story, the MIL insists on taking over the cooking but then gets more and more stressed because it’s not her oven so doesn’t work the same, my mum tries to help but only know about how to cook curry so gets in the way plus the extra bits and pieces like nut roast because my parents are vegetarian, and my mum repeating ad infinitum “we should do this at our house as we have so much space and you can relax”
Father in law has the right idea, takes himself off to the pub in the morning and turns up in time for lunch. -

Nah they are Irish. Our mums are polar opposites, mine is a social animal, loves to invite 100 people to any event, hers is much more quiet and reserved and hates any kind of fuss.

Funnily enough I get on great with my MIL because I am neat and tidy and do a lot of household chores which she appreciates, skills which I learned from my dad

Registered 3 years agoTH, I hope you don't mind but it would seem inevitable that at least one of your kids will become a stand-up comic so I took the liberty of writing some lines for them.
"My dad was Indian and my mom was Irish. So when I see a shami kebab, I dunno whether to eat it, or shove it up my ass"
"My dad was Indian and my mom was Irish. So when I see a Scotsman and a Welshman in a pub, I know there's probably going to be an unfortunate racial incident"
"My dad was Indian and my mom was Irish. So at my wedding, I didn't know whether to chase after my sister-in-law to get my shoes back or punch my drunk brother in the face" -

Registered 3 years agoI've written another observational gag for your kids:
"I decided it's too confusing serving flat bread when my grandmother comes for dinner"
When people chortle a bit about the expected "nan" gag your other kid says "Yeah, grandma O'Pitta does get a bit befuddled"
The ole switcheroo. People will think they're clever like Louis CK -

Registered 18 years agoAll your Christmases sound exhausting.
I'm going to get up late. Start working my way through the absurd mountain of food my mum has stockpiled, have a few beers, eat some more food, presents, christmas lunch, beers again, nap, beers and eat one final time. -

Registered 6 years agoWe've got two staying and three visiting. I like them all plenty but this is going to be one of those holidays where returning to work will feel like a restful relief. -
We're going to Mil for 1pm. Was supposed to be staying over a couple of nights, but we only live a couple of miles away and I don't drink, so what's the point? Plus I've my family over on boxing day. Then it's back to work. Up until now is just been shopping, wrapping and stressing with the odd but of tv thrown in to feel Christmasy.
I really don't get on with the Mil and even less so the bil who is a condescending pillock. It'll be awesome... -

Got an envelope from my father with a few bank notes and a Christmas card that reads "Dear DrStrangelove, here's a little contribution for a new guitar or similar (brothel etc.)". Sometimes I love my father. -

Registered 13 years agoWork finished. Now home with a cold.
Just bought persona 5 (again) and plan is to just drink and play games until I can get back to work on 27th.
Fuck I hate this time of year so much. Supposed to be at family in London but too sick to ride down. But honestly I m thankful. Would rather be downing whisky than sitting with 5 happy couple and their kids while I sit in the corner bemoaning just turned 40 and divorced. Really regret promising my folks would be around this one (last few I have spent in Thailand / Hong Kong etc). They knew I was not keen on the family thing so now think I am pretending to be sick as an excuse to avoid. So am sick, bored and judged
Merry Christmas -

Keep the faith mate. It’s a tough time of year for those who don’t have the perfect 2.4 going on. And shit gets rubbed in your face wherever you look.
Still gaming time and telly sounds decent to me

Registered 8 years agoI've just played Cards Against Humanity with the in-laws.
It would have been more fun if they weren't semi-literate and knew who Ed Balls is. -
Just back from a little walk down the beach (Koh Phangan, on the quiet side). First time I'm spending Christmas away from home with the missus that isn't also another family home.
It's sort of weird here, the resorts all make an effort with xmas events etc but I'd prefer if they didn't as it's pretty tacky and plasticky, and being in the heat here it doesn't really feel right - honestly if people booked a trip half way around the world to spend the christmas days instead of home it's likely they don't give a shit celebrating it (turnout seems low everywhere here so some truth in that it seems). Although, the family guests would probably moan if they wouldn't.
Anyways, Merry Christmas everyone. -

Registered 12 years agoDoes anyone else absolutely HATE the shit Bowie intro version of the Snowman?
The original with Raymond Briggs wandering into the woods himself, and talking about building the snowman, is so demonstrably superior. -
I'm also dealing with a cold today, which is shit. Fortunately I'm already at my parents where I'll be spending the next few days and I don't have to go out or do much at all. Eating, drinking, watching films and playing on my Switch remains the plan.
