I guess it's a way to make sure a game gets finished.
I'm thinking of taking Odin's Sphere in with me ( which I bought on a digital whim for 50 quid not two weeks ago...)

I suspect there will be a grey area between a game being 'finished' and the point you just get bored with it.

I have such a backlog problem I don't know where to start...

I feel like I should I just trade everything in, and start afresh.

I'll have a look at my games and see if I can narrow it down to 5. Maybe this will let me focus and not buy anything else until I have slots free.

Sign me. It'll be hard as I have ps, xbox, switch, and 'legacy' consoles.

Do we chose games for the slots now as I have some games I will almost certainly be playing ?

    1. BF V (don't think I'd truly "finish" this)
    2. Parkitect
    3.
    4.
    5.

Games i have but will not be adding into my list unless I actually play them again

    Spiderman, RDR2, Astroneer.

Games possibly going on the list

Anthem, something on the Switch (Mario vs rabbits?) as I have nothing.

For BF V, I'll declare it finished if I hit 100 hours+, 150 if I buy any DLC.

For Parkitect, I'll consider it finished if I do all the campaigns (assuming this is possible)

You can plan them out or pick 'em as you play 'em. Up to you.

I'm in! Sounds both sensible and doable.

Games bought after seeing this thread yesterday: 0

Games bought from the January (wtf?!) Sale just before: God of War *cough*

Tbh, I have some very good games in my backlog (Nier Automata, God of War), and there's not that many games coming out that I'm actually excited about (like Cyberpunk 2077 late 2019? Maybe Last of Us 2?) so I'm actually hoping to finish more games than I buy in 2019.

My currently pencilled in games are:

1.) Pokemon Lets Go - Finish main story, might complete the poke-dex
2.) Smash - To beat World of light mode and unlock all characters.
3.) Watch Dogs - To beat main story and Main dlc .
    4.)
    5.)

Resi 2 is a dead cert come end of January.

I'm a bit confused. Isn't this for 2019 games, not games you're already playing and carrying over from 2018, or have I misunderstood?

For example, I'm not having Smash as one of my picks because I'm already 50+ hours in with everyone unlocked. However, I shall be having Valkyria Chronicles 4 as one of my picks because I received it (early) for Christmas but haven't started it yet.

    Is that right?

@ghearoid some people are already plucking stuff off their backlogs ready for 2019. I'd imagine nobody is putting a game they've already rinsed on their list. Or maybe they are - it's their choice. :)

Certainly nobody in the 2018 challenge will be doing that - those ten games were hard earned!

Destiny 2 is on my list and I could easily call it finished if I wanted. Itís just still being played on and off.

In that situation I'd say it could be taken off once you have decided you wont be going back to it, rather than just putting it away for later.

Not sure how this all counts for games like Elite or Diablo though. I just play bits of them on and off randomly throughout the year, they're never done.

@Spectral to be clear: you don't get to take a game off just because you've had enough of it. You definitely need to do whatever the 'finishing' conditions are. Remember that this is about not having games sitting un-played, or barely played, or abandoned for no good reason.

If you've got Elite or Diablo, and you've already sunk a fucktonne of time into them, then they're done. They're finished. For the purposes of the challenge they don't need to be on the list. Because you played the shit out of them, and may well continue to do so. Job done. Nice work. :) Sure they may never be "done" for YOU personally, but for the challenge as long as you've played them enough to show you've been a good egg, they're finished.

If, however, you got Destiny 2 and played 8 hours and then decried its awful campaign and primary school level story and want to fuck it off... well bad luck, buddy! You've made a bad choice and need to live with it. It stays on the list and consumes a slot, taunting you with its linear storyline and hammy acting.

That's the amount of consequence that's necessary for the whole thing to work. No risk, no reward. :)

Not sure that's a good choice though tbh, it will put people of taking a chance on things they're unsure of. Once you hit the fuck this game may it burn in the fires of hell for all eternity point, it should be done. Regardless of time played.

@Spectral well yeah - that's the challenge though, innit? The idea is to make us aware of the choices: shit we like, shit we don't, how wasteful we're being, etc. etc.

If you serious think that you're likely to make more than five bad choices in 2019 then... well, maybe there's an issue there? ;)

For sure it'll put some people off. It did last year too. But that's the challenge - if it ain't for you, then it ain't for you.

I guess my first two slots are automatically filled with Octopath Traveller and Detention, which are both unplayed 2018 games. I'm not completing Dark Souls this year either, so that'll be 3 of my 5 slots spent.

Curse these NES games! I never expected I'd enjoy Wario's Woods or Dr. Mario as much as I am.

@DangerousDave_87 depends if you intend to play 'em. Octopath and Detention can both sit in your backlog of shame until you're ready to play. :)

Sign me up Phattso. I would have failed this miserably if it was this year. Can probably count on one hand the number of games I completed but have lost count of how many I've bought.

I'm eyeing up the metro redux bundle in the sale and wondering if i should to try to get through last light before exodus is out.

I started it on 360 before binning it about halfway though when i changed gen.

Are the redux versions worth a go?

Think I'll skip this one. If there's one thing I've learned from the 2018 challenge it's that life is too short to force myself to play something I'm not enjoying any more.

@Nazo sounds like someone has made bad choices. ;-)

Not sure what the big deal is really. There are five slots. Nobody is forcing you to keep playing if you donít want to. But thereíll be a record of the game you hated at least.

Also not everyone even needs a challenge like this. If youíre content with your gaming habits, then go and live a fullsome gaming life and pity us poor fools with overstuffed backlogs. :)

@Phattso I think this challenge will a good motivator to do that. I've enjoyed keeping on top of my games lately. A backlog of 2 games is rather good.

Iím not sure about this. My backlog is biblical and I rarely properly finish a game. Partly because of time restrictions, partly because of my short attention span.

On the other hand, I would like to enjoy games like I used to again, and committing properly to only a few sounds like a good idea.

I donít think I can fully commit, because I think I need to be able to dump something Iím really not enjoying, but I will do my best to limit myself to 5 titles at a time, and to try to play those games properly. Overwatch may be an issue here, though.

I think Iíll probably run a variant of the rules too, but itíll track within the same parameters so wonít make any difference here.

I am in. I am setting myself an additional rule, to hopefully clear up some of the pile of shame. I will only buy a new game if I have played something on the to play list. For every hour I play I will allow myself to spend one pound on a new game.

The games I intend to finish are:

    Wii U:

Paper Mario Colour Splash (Slot 1)
    Zombi U

    Switch:
    Fast Racing RMX
    Mario+Rabbids
    Pokťmon Letís Go (Slot 3)

    PS4:
    Beyond Two Souls
    Detroit : Become Human
    Dishonoured
    God of War (Slot 2)
    Lego Marvel 2 (Slot 4)
    Tearaway Unfolded
    The Last of Us
    Titanfall 2

    SNES Mini:
    Earthbound
    F Zero
    Secret of Mana
    Starfox 2
    Super Mario RPG (Slot 5)

If I complete any of these titles I will allow myself an additional £5 towards a game. But no new games until I have played some of these. I have started Lego Marvel 2 today, but I will not count it towards next years trials.

@Phattso Iím in again please, chuffed to have made it through the 2018 challenge and pruned my unplayed pile, and a 5 game installed limit sounds like a fine way to manage PS4 hard drive space too...

    Gorogoa
