Registered 15 years agoFresh off winning the 20 minute MTB short track flat out sprint race and then the endurance main event two days later- both needing a slightly different kind of fitness- he then does this on the road needing a different aptitude again. I’m seeing a slight backlash on reddit and other places against praising him, but fuck that. I am FULLY erect for this guy. He’s a once in a generation talent and not in just one discipline but three. -

Registered 16 years agoIneos’ Italian champion jersey looks fine. Looks almost as though they’re sponsored by Alitalia.
MvdP struggled on the long climb today in Norway. 3km at 11%. Don’t think there’s anything like that in Yorkshire, is there? -

Registered 15 years agoI did something with very similar numbers off road in Cumbria.
The terrain is definitely there to allow it.

Registered 15 years agoI can’t wait for Yorkshire. I think VdP was probably suffering there, having not ridden a road bike properly for months. If he builds back up endurance well then he’s an obvious shout given the constant undulating roads that should suit his puncheur/sprinter style. The finish is a drag up an incline of a few percent too I think, so it’s going to take a hell of a finish to beat him if he’s still in the pack on the final corner. Fancy Sagan too, of course, and Alaphilippe.
For the women- someone Dutch, hope it’s Vos.
Weather and a narrow course could be an exciting wild card for all of the races though. -

Hoping ITV4's highlights have the same little ditty as they did last year. -

Sean Yates just ruins coverage for me now- he offers absolutely no insight as an ex pro and just mumbles his way through describing exactly what’s on screen or exactly what we were all thinking anyway. Twat. -

The most exciting part of the race up in the Andorran mountains, it's started pissing down, and the live footage has dropped out. -

Registered 8 years agoI just got back last night and I was confused as to why there so many flat packed bikes on the coach. I only just twigged this morning when I was woken up by loud speakers from stands selling merch. Oh and yeah it was actually a massive hail storm, pretty big chunks too. -

Registered 8 years agoYeah I saw them passing through La Massana, the first time I saw them last year it was accidentally as I went for a walk with a friend. Of course this time we just headed for the the nearest bar to get out of the hail. -

At 219.6km, today’s Stage 17 of the Vuelta was the longest of this year’s race – and at an average speed of 50.63kph is thought to have been ridden at a faster pace than any 200km-plus road stage or one-day race in the history of professional cycling.

Including Gilbert's post race interview:

At some peak points they did 75 km/h on the flats
With my 55/11 gears I was doing 110 rpm.
I've never seen anything like that in my 17 career.

I'm interested in tomorrow's stage because it goes through a little place in the mountains I stayed last year and should be whizzing right past the AirBnB I stayed in. I'd love to go back there and cycle instead of run.
