8 missions into this now. Really enjoying the missions, but the story is an overwrought pile of bollocks, isn't it? Much preferred the more straightforward narrative in AC6.

I somehow missed 6, was the story not bollocks?
I mean, that's Ace Combat to me. 90% chasing a dot with my crosshair, 10% bollocks.

@AboutHalfaStevas 6's story was fairly streamlined by the standards of the series. They kept the ludicrous super-weapons and giant flying bosses (and there's plenty of over-acted melodrama), but otherwise the plot was a fairly straightforward war story. 7 spends a bit too much time indulging in the kind of distinctly Japanese over-wrought ultra-relativist bollocks that's normally the hallmark of the mainline Gundam shows.

You know what, fuck it, gonna pick up a copy of 6. Still dunno why or how I managed to avoid it tbh.

The in-game economy is miserable, isn't it? I'm a good chunk of the way through campaign now, I think, but to unlock any of the better aircraft really does require you to go into the vile multiplayer. Fucking hate it when games link singleplayer and multiplayer progression, for no reason other than to drive people into the latter.

    @Rogueywon

Yeah. But may I suggest using the 'Free Mission' option as an alternative? Some missions can net you 100K; still slower than MP but a lot more fun, and gives you the opportunity to try stuff with different/superior aircraft.

Off topic, booted up AC6 on the One today. I must say the visuals hold up remarkably well, in some aspects (cities etc) it may even look better than 7 and this is a 360 game. The gun also feels like a gun and not a peashooter!

Going back to that frame rate is hard work though, so not sure I will finish.

@Rogueywon It sort of works if you plan a route in advance - I was able to unlock a new plane every 2 or 3 missions.

It's definitely on the stingy side, though...... I got to the end of one route and had the 920k plane for the last two missions, but there's no way I'll be seeing the rest of the planes. Which is a bit of a shame.

And after completing the game you unlock a 2m value plane. Even with the ~1m you get for the final mission, don't think I'll bother playing another 10 replays just to get the last plane. Guess it's in for MP enthusiasts.... again, bit of a shame!

If they were going to force people into multiplayer, I wish they'd made it more interesting. The only modes are free-for-all and team deathmatch. They're both crap as the game frankly isn't really designed for straightforward PvP battles, so they just descend into endless circling and hoping for an RNG missile hit.

If they'd had proper objective-based multiplayer, with team-based scenarios around... say... attacking an enemy base while defending your own, or escorting cargo planes or something, it could have been a lot more fun.

Yeah, I haven't actually tried multiplayer yet but you'd have thought you could have had some fairly creative options there. But I'd imagined pvp would just be endlessly flying round in a circle, so feck that!

If only they'd had an attempt at an online-only multiplayer style game before......wait a minute.

@oldschoolsoviet Yes, I've got to say, if this is what that Ace Combat Online game was like, it's no wonder it flopped.

Ace Combat's whole flight model is designed around PvE. The games feel fun and satisfying to play because the AI is, by design, pretty poor. It will fly in straight lines for protracted periods, giving you plenty of time to line up shots and meaning that the game's dumb-as-bricks missiles can actually hit sometimes. So you get to rack up the kills and feel like an ace.

In multiplayer, everybody is just spinning in circles constantly, because that's the way to make sure missiles don't hit you. Getting kills seems to be mostly about getting a lucky angle on somebody, or having somebody be dumb enough to fly straight and level for a second or so in order to line up a shot.

The fact that guns do next to no damage really doesn't help either. Pure PvP multiplayer (the only type on offer) is an absolute horror to play and I strongly suspect the only reason the servers are populated is that it is so much faster to grind cash in multiplayer.

You can, but its more effective to get a really fast jet, and boom-and zoom (fly in fast, fire missiles, fly away fast) in to get others. Similar tactic in team death-match, get a fast jet, lure people into chasing you, and let your wing-men take the kills for team victory.

Yeah, I was about to say (and do bear in mind, I'm avoiding any unnecessary exposure to human as I always do, so I'm yet to try multiplayer): isn't the point to use your wingmen and try to lure opponents into chasing you for a bit, thereby setting them up?

Yes, that is exactly what wingmen are for - but if you've never watched Top Gun you might not realise it.

@brokenkey boom and zoom! Nice. If I ever give MP a go, I'll have to give that a try.
