My favourite thing to do when a group of us went to some rural pub in deepest darkest Dorset was make my mate order me some ridiculous fruity cocktail when it was his round and see if he made it back from the bar alive.

My dad forgot himself and ordered a desperado in one of these backwater shitholes and the bloke behind the bar nearly prolapsed. Carried on like heíd ordered a woo woo.

At least I don't have to listen to Estuary English any more. Plus, people think I'm exotic here.

I met someone from Romford (bleugh) in town the other day, so there's two of us.

Sorry, that wasn't an aimed dig, Nick mentioned kids in the Peaks moved there for more excitement.

I had a pretty exciting time the only time I ever went into the Peak District, finding out which bakery made the first bakewell tart it was all of them

Not so much excitement, just opportunity. Thereís no work, houses are more expensive because their parents keep objecting to planning applications, the phone signal is shit....

Plus, tbf, derby has (or had) the second or third best cost of living ratio in the country behind Reading. Low cost of housing and other shit and a load of ok tech jobs.

They have a Costco. That's the sign that a city has truly made it in my mind.

Derby's a lovely place to live, nice countryside, city is just big enough and lots of countryside. Lovely people in the main.

Not exactly booming with jobs but never will be.

Not exciting tbf but I loved my time there.

Maybe there's two Derby's and I always went to the unmitigated shithole one by bad luck

It was hit hard by the recession, it was very different pre 2009. If you think Derby is an unmitigated shithole you're obviously not very well travelled in the UK.

A lot of people look at me incredulously when I say I'm from Essex - what are you doing in fookin' Derby etc.

Well, I don't have to put up with legions of Dagenham Daves anymore and I can afford to live in a detached house in a fairly nice rural area, on a pretty average salary with zero commute time and bang-on 35 hours a week (sometimes not even that).

Actual Derby city centre is a shit hole, mind.

The Derbyshire oatcake is the fat, unwanted sister of the North Staffs oatcake.

    Just saying.

I can confirm the Staffordshire oatcake is the superior one.

I don't know how long you've been there, but it wasn't always like that. It was one of the cities that was on the up until the crash, and since then it has been shat on by austerity. It's a great case study.

The university was bringing loads of new people in, cathedral quarter, saddler gate and the main high street were all fairly vibrant with lots of cool, independent shops. It was a really great place. I lived there from 2002-2011.

I go back frequently as I have friends there, most live outside the city now, which is largely unchanged. City itself yeah, since that Westfield/Intu opened it killed all the cool shops and dragged all the footfall to the shitty west of the centre and the decent bits all died.

It's a shame that goverment policy has turned the city centre into a dump. The residents deserve sympathy not derision.

Absolutely banging. I miss them. Runny egg and bacon in one of those is one of the best kept culinary secrets going!

Agreed. My missus is from Staffordshire, and frankly that (and her) are the only good things to come out of the place.

Oatcakes are alright. They are great with a savoury breakfast when a pancake is a bit much.

Our local oxon delicacy is a 'Lardy Cake' which really is shit.

Its also why Turkey famously denied the Armenian one with Erdogan asking 'You fuckers have seen Keeping Up With The Kardashians, right?'

Itís pretty embarrassing for the Beeb on behalf of both of them.

I donít know if itís just my middle class programming but I do still firmly believe the BBC is a valuable institution and when I look at the way broadcast TV works in other countries, I still would take it over most alternative. BUT, it needs to take a serious look at what itís becoming and some of the people itís platforming a get a fucking reboot in place ASAP.

    Ooof. That's quite something.

Is this from a Darren Grimes YouTube channel?

I've never really followed the agitators and commentators except when they appear on my Twitter feed.
