I see Duffy has called out Netflix for their new film that glamourises rape. I must admit I wasn't familiar with said film, then had a look at it. Definitely not the kind of thing that needs to be made these days.

All this from the service that produced Unbelievable. They're really starting to fuck me off these days.

    It's proven very popular though.

We can (and should) criticise this kind of narrative but we can't pretend that a lot of people, a lot of women, find these kind of *fantasies* appealing. That does not mean they wish to be raped themselves.

I'd be interested to see the breakdown of who was watching the film but I'd be surprised if it a large percentage of viewers weren't female. If we use 50 Shades of terrible writing as an earlier example, i wouldn't be surprised if it's a female majority audience.

Of course, the massive and unavoidable issue is that people find themselves in these kind of situations in reality, and it's awful.

EG with a very important piece on the front page about sexual harassment in video games - canít trust its own comment section (quite rightly) so lock comments for the article.

I watched the trailer and that film basically looks like woman gets kidnapped and raped until Stockholm Syndrome sets in. Not my kind of thing at all.

This is a really good piece. Gaming culture is absolute dogshit with so much misogyny and homophobia and racism. GamerGateís test drive of Trumpís culture war demonstrated that. I struggle to see the problem being solved when developers like Rockstar and Activision promote it so heavily and find it so profitable in communities like GTA Online and COD.

I think comments off should be the default for most news and features.

Wow, Evo (the worlds biggest fighting game tournament) has been cancelled. It pivoted to an online tournament after the covids hit but in this last week it (re)emerged that one of the organisers is, basically, a pedo and pretty much every top Smash Brothers player is a sex offender.

Every game and commentator pulled out and the remaining organisers were pretty much forced to bin it.

Only just read it, I think they correctly kept the comments closed but it could also have been an opportunity to engage those toxic people head-on (as they were bound to pop up).

    Good piece anyway...

    @simpleexplodingmaybe Yes, that's the film.

Out of anger, I did some perusing of Netflix this morning. Seems that if you have blackface, they'll pull that, but if you have homophobic statements, openly misogynistic jokes, victim blaming and pressuring people for sex = all good.

    Glad I cleared that up.

I have some sympathy for Netflix and the like here. It would be tone deaf to profit from content that features blackface in the midst of whatís happening right now, so I agree with their immediate reaction to remove that content. But then thereís a wider conversation to be had in general about what responsibility they have for their content and how itís positioned and curated.

The first I heard about this film was the fact it contained the most explicit sex scene ever allowed on Netflix. And Netflix counts a "view" as anything over 2 minutes. I'd bet a big reason it seemed so popular and hit their "Top Ranked" list almost immediately was down to people checking out the sex scene for shits & giggles- and only then realising there was a mediocre and thematically dodgy film around it.

The film is fucking dreadful. Watched it with my wife and it's just nonsensical garbage.

I feel like this may be the job but I find most sex scenes are pointless titlation and are just used to be edgy like GoT.

Occasionally they are thematic and serve a plot purpose but mostly they are meh.

Porn is freely available so there is little pointless.

Kind of similar to the post that got the "effiks in videogames journalism" crowd going.

Oh goddamn... I'm not a fan of their music but they seemed like decent chaps. Well...three of them did. That's Tom's career over and rightly so.

    Anyone remember Justin Lee Collins?
