42. Trans but I'm white and pass, I don't feel particularly under-privileged in day to day life. Things were hard when I was penniless and couldn't get decent work for years but now I'm doing okay for myself. Being white just makes life so much easier - A South Asian, Muslim colleague was telling me today how she was struggling to adopt a cat, she's had to use a fake English name to get shelters/breeders to reply to her enquiries and when she turned up at one breeder she was told "we don't let your kind adopt cats." Registered 9 years agoI remember being in Japan once and wanted to rent a flat. And the real estate agent guy was very polite and apologetic as he explained that they didn't do business with foreigners.

Registered 9 years agoAnyway, I definitely had it easy compared to other people I knew there. Knew an African American dude who often had people crossing to the other side of the road when they saw him walking towards them. Or giving him a wide berth on train seats, stuff like that.
I did have the cops called on me once, though. They were also very polite. -

We thought nothing of it until two cops came and started talking to us. And I don't *know* that it was the girls who reported it, but I strongly suspect they did, because while we were talking to the police they hurried past and left on their bikes, sneaking little glances at us.
Like I said, though, the police were very polite. We weren't in trouble, they just wanted to know what we were doing, etc. I told them that I lived there, and that was that, basically.
Obviously this sort of shit happens on a regular basis to people not as privileged as me. But as someone who had never had that happen to them... yeah, it was a bit weird. -

Registered 16 years agoThat's why the Japanese are obsessed with robots. They hate immigration as much if not more than anyone, and they have a falling fertility rate. Someone's got to do all those jobs as they all get crumbly.

The worst I ever heard from someone there (aside from a guy who randomly pulled me aside to rant about the Korean mafia being responsible for all local crime), was from a Japanese-Brazilian factory worker I got to regularly drinking with. He was allowed to work there on account of his Japanese ancestry, but him and his similarly-heritaged co-workers were openly treated like absolute shit. Not "so sorry I'm racist" politeness, just full-on "half-breed trash" kind of stuff.

Registered 9 years agoI don't know if it's still the case, but a while back the media seemed pretty intent on blaming the failing economy on selfish millennials who didn't stay in a steady job, didn't want to have kids because it might cramp their swanky lifestyle, etc etc.
Similar to some of the conversations in Western societies, really, but to me the Japanese version seemed especially retrograde. -

Registered 4 years agoI get the feeling that it’s effectively a career change for her now. She weighed up apology, retrospection and recovery, climbing the hill again, vs playing it up (not hugely - it’s clear she’s not a particularly progressive or pleasant person anyway) and milking the right wing darling circuit, and decided the latter is the path to go.
Basically the full Katie Hopkins route. -
I wonder if she'll ever think back to what things could have been like with that sweet, sweet Disney career moving her forward.
Oh well, I guess we'll see how well she can grift now.
