Does look good in an desolate, cold, bleak and uninviting sort of way

Let me know if the game is good as well.
    I thank you

Quick game related question. Do you play the same protagonist in all 3 games?

Not all 3 because he dies at the end of the second. Well he did in mine as I forgot to hunt for gas mask filters and was stuck in an outside bit with not enough air to get through it. I should just go back and cheese it by putting the mask on for a second and taking it off instantly until that bit is done.

Was going to pick this up until I saw they wanted 43 for the pc version. They can fuck right off, I will wait a month and get it for 25.

Played for a few hours, and it's very good, Stalker-lite with a story.

Gorgeous, great vistas, and I'm only a third of the way through the first zone. There is an obligatory introduction setting things up for about 40mins, and then it guides you through the new mechanics in the early part of the first zone, that I'm already loving. A zealot church, an 'exiled' mechanic, a bridge to assault, all set amongst a flooded landscape, dotted with ruined houses that might be worth exploring, ruins brimming with mutants, and an underground tunnel network I think I've barely touched offering all kinds of sneaky approaches.

Old Far Cry 2 style choosing night/day by resting in beds is in, and there seems to be time progression naturally anyway, so it'll be fun for those sneaky night assaults. Lots of little safehouses dotted around for this, and ammo/weapon crafting at the workbenches too. The backpack system is handy for switching up a weapon, changing that 4x for a reflex heading into a building, and the odd bit of secondary/medkit/filter top-ups in emergency, but I'm sure it'll offer more.

If I had complaints, the gunplay feels a little light compared to the brutality of the previous two, and the load times do feel somewhat horrendous for a checkpoint restart - must get into the habit of quicksave/load. This is on base PS4/disc, so I'd imagine it'd be far better on download/SSD etc. There's also an annoying aim-assist for us console plebs at least, with a weird mix of quick-scope headshots and throwing your aim off everywhere - haven't found an option to switch it off, but there is a patch (3.7GB) waiting in the wings.

But yeah, it's good. Much more slow-burn than before, punctuated by similar bursts of action. Looking forward to getting some carriages hooked up to this train !

Does it use save data from last light, or totally ignore your choices like last light did?

    i. e. Should i make tge effort to play last light before hand?

@Vortex808 The game continues from the 'canon' ending in LL just like 2033

Yeah, no usage of save data. LL is still worth a blast though, great game. The DLC 'scavenger' mission from it was definitely a test-bed idea, and they've followed through pretty damn well.

Getting chased by watchmen, only to run into bandits, then sit back and enjoy the mayhem as they tore into each other ignoring me was pretty good there. Think decoy tins might even help manufacture such clashes in future. Now, about this generator puzzle......

Thanks folks. Will probably play this first, then re-visit LL to finally get it finished later on.

Well it actually seems to run a lot better than expected - well except for the crashes.

The opening (linear) level is absolutely drop dead gorgeous.

Holy shit, Volga is incredible looking.

I get occasional mild stutters on PC, I suspect the asset streaming / open world is extremely resource heavy.

I've had two freezes in the hour I've played and knives keep getting stuck in the air. My general feeling from playing (perhaps read: watching) the opening hour is ehhhhhhhhh.

How are you guys playing it early? Got this week off so it would be ideal if I can get cracking tonight.

I am absolutely loving it, despite the fact that I have a bug which means I can't quick save, and I can't change the difficulty (intended I assume). I am creeping around the Volga map in Ranger Hardcore mode, bricking it every time I haven't had an auto save in a while.

How much has it morphed into the Stalker series? If that is a fair comment to make at all.

Can report no such issues on PS4, despite the fan noise. Finally chalked up Volga, followed by an action-packed, mostly linear sequence, and straight back into exploring on a gorgeous Caspian desert area, very Mad Max.

To say it's even more gorgeous than Volga is an understatement.

I'm also liking the game coping with allowing you to forge on ahead just exploring and stumbling into stuff without it breaking the story (finding key items without having the request first), or allowing the story to guide you through it with a bit more of a helping hand. It's all very seamless and just works damn well.

Hopefully those issues get fixed promptly for you guys.

    @Tomo

The game starts with a couple of linear sections to get you out of Moscow, then lands in a big sort of swamp I guess. I gather there are two big open world levels, two 'wide corridor' style maps, and various linear sections in between.

I am in the first open world section, and it is basically Stalker with one hell of a lick of paint. Scavenge resources, craft med kits and ammo, customise weapons, be alert for radioactive areas and reluctantly go underground. Avoid mutants, stab / snipe / gun down bandits, and get murdered in a couple of hits.

Stalker SoC is my favourite single player fps ever, and I had to force myself to stop playing Exodus because I have work in the morning and I just wanna keep going because it's so fucking good.

    YMMV; I accept no liability.

STALKER 1 is top 5 material for me as well. FFS, I really want it, just on Steam :(
