I randomly came across a story of Housing Benefits assessors getting done for fraud. I used to do that for a living about 15 years ago, so always read anything about that when it's in the news. But almost fell off my chair when I realised I actually knew these fraudsters. What absolute scum.

Anybody else work with criminals? And only discovered it after they were done?

I once met Harold Shipman in the course of a summer job when I was at uni. Before he was famous. Had a complete "fucking hell" moment a year or so later when the story broke.

Didn't work with him as such, but hey, it's a claim to fame.

Had a 60 something year old guy start at work about 10 years ago. Only lasted a week.
Mid morning, while everyone gawped the police pulled into the car park, went through reception, to his desk and promptly arrested him. He was surfing for kiddie porn and the dumb twat was too computer illiterate to realise IT would know what he was doing.

    Dr. Jekyll of Hyde.

My ex went to school with his son. Poor sod. I think he changed his name and moved to Australia.

I used to have a job in UAT in banking, and there was someone who set up their mortgage payments to a Production environment test account. Because she was also one of the people reconciling these every month, no one else knew for about a year.

Interesting day when she got rumbled.

My very first boss when I started in a "proper" job also got caught - though not sure whether he was prosecuted or just fired. He left that team at the same time I did and took up a post in HR. A year or so later, he got found out for passing loads of recruitment consultancy contracts to a firm run by his brother-in-law with no competitions or checks.

I sold a phone to a guy who was later convicted of rape(s). I had to give a statement as I could place him in a certain place at a certain time.

I've met a few murderers and nonces because of my missus's old job. One of them got a bit obsessed with her and starting painting her Clive Barker-esque tableaux of bloody meat and such.

    Interesting times.

I used to work for DWP and quite a few people I knew of got done for gaming the system with claimants to get money (only approving crisis loans if they got half the money etc).

Oh, my cousin is a nonce who kidnapped a couple of girls. Second cousin, not first, so that's fine.

I was doing a day shift in my first pub job and there was a celebration going on because some guy had just got out of prison.

Erm, that's not a patch on some of the other stories in here though.

I've got a 2nd cousin who did time in prison for conspiracy to murder his father.

I've never met him, but he's a bit of a cunt by all accounts.

Lad I went to school with was banged up for his part in the scooter gang raids on luxury retailers in Knightsbridge. My dad used to drink with a guy called hippie Dave who was a washing machine repairman - he was exposed on cowboy traders for taking parts off machines, taking it to the van for the “replacement” and refitting the same part for a great price

It's refreshing to think that the guys at the top are still prepared to muck-in with the menial tasks.

Had a manager get sent down in for perjury. We had a toast when it happened as she was a nasty cunt. Was in Japan and she was a westerner. Bet she had an extra special time.

Not a criminal, but I went to school with a girl who got into a love triangle and ended up getting bludgeoned to death and left in a ditch.

The Rooney family were/are very well-known in my old area. Half of them are in prison for slavery now.

    @Vice.Destroyer

Is there not quite a lot of moody shit that goes on in councils though? Heard lots about people getting shuffled on housing lists, premises inspectors getting bungs, and so forth.

I worked somewhere very very large with a CEO on huge money, that was sort of public sector. Despite a big drive on ethics and conflict of interest registers, somehow we seemed to get a very expensive system thrown at us that wasn't fit for purpose and had been sourced from the CEO's previous industry. That was a product produced by his wife's company. That cost millions. That they couldn't get to work for us. Because it was designed for another industry.

    Hey ho.

My friends uncle got dug up after the family DNA matched for a string of murders in the 70's.

Years and years ago there was a story of a local prostitute that had been murdered which was all over the local radio and papers. The actual murder had been pretty barbaric with the culprit shitting in the girls mouth etc. Anyway, where I was working at the time there was a friendly enough fella who’d recently started as a labourer known as “Taff”. A few weeks passed and Taff stopped showing up for work and the police began daily visits interviewing everyone who he associated with (fortunately not me cause I didnt actually work with him) and it turned out it was him who’d murdered the prostitute.

Was sat in the office one lunchtime when a load of blokes came in, turns out it was Cheshire CID come to close us down.
    And that's what happened.

Kinda knew that postman that stole €1.5 million to fund his ludicrous gambling habit ("Tony 10" is the name of the book about him). Seemed like a mostly ok lad to me.

Played football and went to school with a good few fellas who ended up in prison a few times.
