This thread has gone very interesting. First the game is incredible, now it's very frustrating and people are bouncing off it. Interesting.

@JamboWayOh I think it's one of those games that doesn't fall neatly into a review-score scale. The technology is amazing. The world-building is fantastic. The characters are a bit pedestrian. The combat is poor. Combat reminds me in many ways of the first Mass Effect - that slightly floaty feel, lack of heft and off-kilter enemy behaviour.

@JamboWayOh i did call much of this out right away, but Iím a miserable cunt so clearly while everyone else was hyping it up this fell on deaf ears.
The things I do for you guys lol.

It is a good game though, just not a top top drawer one. Iím still playing through it, and now Iíve got levitate it does give things another little shot in the arm, I just think the pacing os a little off but then itís slightly open by design so ymmv there.

Nah I'm still really liking it. It's just the shit side bosses that make you walk for 12 hours to try them again. They'd be fine if they put a fucking checkpoint in.

The combat is far from poor. It's excellent when you are linking all your powers together and switching between guns to cause carnage....at 13fps

Frustrating combat but then I powered up and had levitate, now having a blast cleaning up the missions after finishing the story.

I don't mind the combat. Wouldn't say it's bad but it's not excellent. It's a bit one-note despite the powers. The bosses mostly suck but they're pretty much all optional and attached to side missions.

The set-up is good. The ending is a bit abrupt and doesn't give a nice sense of closure but I'm not really sure how it was going to once the story got going.

Level-design is good, some of the mind-bendy shit they do is crazy. The physics and destruction they do is awesome.

I'm definitely glad to have played it, I don't regret it at all. Remedy just need to tidy up the wonky 5% they don't quite nail down and you'd have some of the best executed narrative-driven action-adventures in the industry. They're so close.

I really like the Remedy universe and this is a good chunk o' that tone. They're the best kind of weird.

Finished the main story last night. Gonna trade in for Astral Chain while it still has respectable value then redownload when it inevitably comes to Game Pass to finish the side missions and DLC.

Verdict - I loved it. The world I thought was one of the most compelling and well-being crafted since Bioshock. The lighting and physics felt like a glimpse at the next gen, and physics in particular really added to the gameplay IMO as everything felt so dynamic and realistic. I also thought the combat was great - enemy AI was a bit simplistic but aside from that I thought your powers gave you a great range of options and it all controlled very intuitively IMO. Would've been nice to have a radial menu to change your weapon loadout though.

For my money one of the most enjoyable games of this type I've played for ages.

Why is it perpetually 1:25 in the oldest house? Has time stopped inside?

Everything in the house is 25 times smaller than outside

I think the combat is great, just the bosses are iffy.

I did the Ashtray Maze before bed last night and it was fucking amazing. That sequence alone is worth the price of entry.

This is no kind of excuse for not completing an existing narrative well.

Yeah I'm not sure about making DLC that effectively completes a story that should have been done in the main game. It's one of the things that gets my ire about modern gaming, DLC should add to the experience and not be a way of finishing an unfinished game.

Got the Plat tonight, straightforward and fairly easy one if you are going to do the annoying optional bosses anyway. All in all a great but pretty flawed game.

I feel like Jesse is accepting this whole thing rather easily. I'm going to try and walk back to the entrance and see if I can just leave. I know I couldn't at the start, but now I can throw shit.

I find the game a little uneven. The pacing can be a little all over the place.
Part of that is down to how i choose to react to the events that tend to pull you around the place I guess but thatís also how theyíve designed it. You can be wiped out pretty quickly in the bounty events that pop up after traipsing all the way over the other side of the house midway through a mission which results in a instafail. This can be very frustrating as I spent a bit of time yesterday getting nudged all over and not achieving much.

Not attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion, but things.

So a friend gave me a code for it on pc and after some tweaking got it running at 60fps on my 970. Obviously some things turned down but looks great.

About an hour or two in and I like the atmosphere but whats with going all the way back to the "save" point when dieing. I always miss quick saving in games.

    Also, Threshold kids... wtf O.o

Finished it as well, and while it's far from perfect, it's still something everyone who is passionate about games should play (eventually).

The Oldest House is one of the best game worlds ever, both aesthetically and conceptually.

I would assume the S will get ugly in the late game encounters based on my experience with the Pro.
It's still very playable though. They're also working on a performance patch.

If you're interested in it just go for it. It's well worth playing even with the few problems it has.

    @Derblington
Yeah, I think I will. I'm not really the type of player who notices or cares about fps/performance stuff in games generally anyway but with this game there just seemed to be an unusual amount of criticism directed at it. I really like the look of it though and as long as the game is basically playable then its okay by me.
I will be treating myself to a pro around christmas time but I don't particularly want to wait that long

You absolutely will notice it when it occurs but it shouldn't ruin your overall enjoyment.
