Pop quiz: Without looking it up, try to name a single character from Avatar.

It's harder than it sounds. Definitely harder than you'd expect from a movie that made billions and that everyone saw.

Ang, but I only watched the cartoon not the film. My daughter used to love it but I wouldn’t go to the cinema on my own to see it. When it came out she was more into going to the cinema with her friends.

    Lol

For contrast, I can easily remember the names of the lead two characters in Titanic, Cameron's other big cash cow. And I've only seen that once. Hell, I can remember at least one character from Prometheus, and that wasn't even a great movie.

I think the difference is that Titanic was a better movie that had something to offer (eg. memorable characters) aside from impressive special effects. Avatar isn't shit or anything - that's going way too far - but it has all the depth of a theme park ride. It's not nearly as good as his other movies.

And yes, I know that the sequels will still get all the hype and make squillions regardless of how good I think they are. That's fine. I can only speak for my own opinion.

I have just realised, after the mention of unobtainium, we aren’t talking about the Last Airbender.

They were going to go with "Shinyshinygorocks" but it didn't go down well with test audiences.

Like everyone else I can't see the point in one sequel let alone multiple. Does anyone give a fuck about Blue CGI characters?

If Avatar was a new story set in a new world it might work but bringing back Worthington and ci?

    Zzzzzzzzz

The leads are Jake Sully and N'tiri (though I don't know how they spell the latter). Weaver's character is called Grace, I think. The other nerdy dude in the Avatar program with Jake might be called Benny?

    That's all I got tho.
ed: just checked, the other dude is called Norm Spellman.

But the 3D is amazing! Oh, you can’t get 3D tv’s anymore? Shame

You keep talking about the 3D. It was a big deal because it was actually cool but that isn't all the movie was.

I remember seeing Avatar at launch and thinking the 3D was pretty shit.

I'd been to Disney World in America a few years before and they had a few rides (Honey I Shrunk The Audience being the one I remember clearly) where the 3D effect was so much better.

I really loved the 3D though I remember about half way through the movie I stopped paying attention to it.

I'm not sure if that's because my eyes adjusted or because I was so bored my eyes glazed over.

    Could go either way.

I liked the pure spectacle of it. Sure, it had a do it by numbers plot and forgettable characters but it was easy to just switch the brain off and enjoy the view.

If the Avatar sequels are about the tech used on different characters travelling to different worlds, then sure, I'll be interested. It'll be cool to see humans use the Avatar under water, on desert, in low gravity, etc. World building is something Cameron is genuinely good at, even if his characters are shallow and his dialogue laughably simplistic.

But if it's just direct sequels to the first one, then forget it. They can't replicate the hype for the first film, because 3D failed. And as stated by many here already, the first film's plot and characters have been largely forgotten.

They're direct sequels. That's been known for a while.

Avatar 4 will experience a 10 year delay while Cameron works out the technology to simulate an allotment in inner Swindon.

Jake Sully is pretty easy to remember just because Zoe Saldana's character (Neytiri?) says it about 400000 times in the film.

I couldn't even tell you what happened in it. Some kind of eco feel good nonsense with deformed smurfs?
