Nice on the PS4 BC though. Should greatly help keeping some PS4 games' online communities lively for years to come. -

Registered 16 years agoThe SSD is welcome news, but it does raise the question about storage space and the cost of upgrades. The price-per-GB of SSDs has come down a lot over the last 6 months or so, but they're still expensive. 1TB drives aren't too bad these days, but the 2TBs remain steep and anything above that gets prohibitively expensive. Do we know how much the console will ship with by default yet? 1TB? That's already feeling a bit restrictive given the size of modern AAA games. -

Registered 12 years ago2TB at least. If they can stream data very fast, I can see the size of games increase to 200GB. They could do a game where every single texture is unique and very high res. I think we might see games that come with a bluray and still require a 100GB download. -
Armoured_Bear wrote:
Why not? Some people like some variation in the games they play concurrently. Also as Fake Blood mentions future games are likely to bloat further in size.

I mean Forza Motorsport 7 is over 100GB and that game is 2 years old now. -

Registered 16 years agoThe big increase in install sizes over the last few years has been driven by higher definition textures and other assets. I think Forza 7 was the first game to tip over 100GB for its default install, but others have followed. The list gets even broader when you look at games whose default install is under 100GB, but which have optional 4K texture packs that take it over (e.g. Middle Earth: Shadow of War).
The PS5 has "8K support" on its feature list. I doubt many people are going to be developing games with 8K assets any time soon, given displays above 4K remain so rare and so expensive, but when that does eventually happen (probably during the PS5's lifespan), install sizes are going to soar again. -

The more space the better, obviously but I don't think it's an issue.
Once sizes grow even more, there will be a PS5 Pro with more storage anyway. -

Depends on the size of the screen and how close you are to it. On a 55" screen with a normal couch-to-TV viewing distance in the 2-3m range, I doubt you'd notice much difference between 4K and 8K. On an 85" screen at the same distance - yes, you'll notice.
8K is so pointless.

The difference between 1080p and 4K isn't really noticable on... say... a 32" screen at that kind of distance, but on a 55" it's blatant.

A few years ago, people thought 55" TVs were ludicrously large. Now a lot of people seem to think the range starts there...

Registered 15 years agoI really wouldn’t say 4K is blatant on a 55”. It’s noticeable but not significantly. 65” maybe.
If 85” is the size at which 8K becomes meaningful that feels very niche indeed. -

Registered 10 years ago8K is such utter nonsense, broadcasters don't even make the most of 1080p, never mind 4K.

For now, maybe. But the way people think about TVs seems to have changed over the last few years. They've gone from being something that goes on a stand on one side of the living room, to something with generally covers the best part of the width of an entire wall.

VR/AR would be very noticeable, it could go higher even and still get some gains probably. Not much else though. I still have a 13 year old 720p projector that's pretty good. I can't imagine a 4k one being that much different to an 8k one, even with 120" diagonal.

Registered 16 years agoPCs will probably be at the spearhead of any major push beyond 4K. The much smaller viewing distance with your average desk/monitor setup really shows up low resolutions. 1080p looks rancid on a 28" monitor and 1440p only slightly better. -

Registered 6 years agoI'm not really following what all the fuss is about PS4 BC. I mean, that's the least I expected. Maybe also an SSD drive. Yeah, it's nice to have this stuff confirmed, but in my eyes releasing a PS5 without BC would have been a pretty big mistake (and without SSD a smaller one - but still a mistake).
It's the seemingly inconsequential things that they dropped the ball on this gen (and need to up their game on, for me). Don't get me wrong, I loves my PS4 as much as the next nerd, but stuff like cooling, poor USB design (lack of, combined with stuff just plain not working through a hub by design, i.e. external HDD), having to charge the joypads after a few hours, steering wheel support, etc. -

There isn't any point not throwing 8K in there as a sales pitch, because to be 60fps at 4K and excellent for VR it probably has to be barely 8K capable anyway.
The real benefit of PS5 is that it will not have to be back compatible with PS4 which will allow new hardware power to be fully exploited. That will only happen at least 2 years into the cycle though, so I reckon you are looking best part of 4 years before you will be playing a "proper" PS5 title. In the meantime the Pro should see quite a few price drops. All good for me.
