@Tomo The combat in this is not on Doom's level. Yes, there's a certain heft to the weapons and a nice emphasis on movement, but compared to Doom, the environments and enemies are very samey. There's a large range of weapons and you can carry them all at once, a la Doom, but the lack of enemy variety, the scarity of ammo for the exotic weapons and the fact that the fully upgraded rifle and shotgun are so good means you'll probably mostly stick to those two. |

Registered 18 years agoOn the other hand while i liked doom i found it samey and rage had much more variety for me - ended up using skills a lot in the last third and one of the other weapons. But can see different strpkes for different folks. -

Registered 17 years agoStarted this last night, played for an hour or so. Early doors but I like it.
I think it's helped hugely by coming to it straight after playing through Rage. It's very much a sequel in so many ways, but improves on almost everything. As a result, even driving around/shooting in the Phoenix feels smooth and responsive. The vehicle handling in the first game is garbage.
In fact a lot of stuff in the first game is pretty bad now, and while this feels similar in many fundamental ways, it adds a level of precision and sheen that the first really lacks. -

Registered 17 years agoAnd just got the Platinum.
It's a decent game, better than I was expecting after the reviews/general word of mouth. Once you get all the powers and get upgraded it's a lot of fun just massacring encampments.Definitely captures a power fantasy.
The biggest problem I think it has is actually story - it's very short and they don't find a way to make the open-world content seem valuable or meaningful. The actual content that's there is fine but it has nothing glueing it together so it feels like its just "stuff to do" and it makes up the bulk of the game.
The trophy list is a bit pants too, for any one that enjoys that. -

Registered 9 years agoIf anyone is playing this on an AMD card, the latest drivers seem to have made a huuuuge different to my framerate. I'm on a Vega 64 with a 3440x1440 screen and I'd had the resolution turned down to about 80%, and it was still really choppy. It's silky smooth now though at native res.
Loving the game, incidentally. Great fun. Such satisfying shooting! And enough upgrades to keep you going. The story is, well, one of the only games where I've ever just literally skipped everything as soon as possible. But at least you can skip most of it.
While I'm on it, other minor grievances - finding a shitty data pad is annoying to complete an area. The crates are bad enough, but a tiny little tablet?! Over and over again? Fuck off.
Love it otherwise though. -

Registered 10 years agoYeah the issues there is the upgrades are some of the most useful ones and tied to the exciting stuff such as arks finds etc, but the game (if you working your way around naturally) seems to mean it’s the last faction area you are likely to go to, least it was for me. -

Registered 9 years agoSmall grievances aside, I can't wait to play it after work. I've upgraded the double jump so you can go miles, and you can hover in mid air by aiming, and you have two dashes that work in mid air and reset the hover timer. And have upgraded sprint speed. So I can now bomb around like a prick, leaping and gliding all over the place. Great fun! -

Registered 9 years agoI would say the combat is vastly more fun than Doom. Doom 2 or whatever they're calling it is probably going to feel sluggish after this. -

Registered 17 years agoI doubt it - Doom Eternal has dashes, double jumps and the meat hook..
The only real difference is that Rage gives you more easy use crowd control and things die much faster in general - it's super easy to wipe an entire group and move on, whereas Doom requires more of a dance around stronger opponents in an arena. Rage is vastly more simple.

New patch out, fixing this and that including speeding up menus and sharpening the image. Will check it out in a bit.
It’s 14gb on XBX. -

Registered 10 years agoSo any verdicts on improvements? I know it’s hardly going to change the game though. Have they sharpened things up? Not sure how far they can go with 1080p but good to hear they were trying. -

Isn't the first of the expansions due today?
And then Destiny 2 going FTP on 01/10/19 - I'm gonna have to get un-obsessed with Borderlands 3. -

Registered 20 years agoSlightly tempted by this - I see deluxe is 50% on Xbox store atm. Might still be too much?
I really enjoyed Mad Max and quite enjoyed Rage so I thought this was goong to suit me quite nicely (mainly solo player, tooling around the world)... initial word put me off but a new expansion and cheaper deal might get me going again. -
Fuck me, a 26gb patch!?
In other news, I saw murmurings that this was heading Game Pass soon... -

Registered 17 years agoRight maybe a stupid question but how do I "lock in" projects etc. I choose a load of different things, all good, keep playing them save and quit. When I reload I have to do it all over again.
As for the game, it really is "Mad Doom" (obviously) which is not bad company to be in. It is definitely an hour at a time game but that hour is bloody good fun, assuming I can get past having to re-spec each time I play. -

Registered 17 years agoFeck me this crashes a lot. I get at least one every time I play. I have looked online and it does seem very common place, that and the menus locking up or having serious lag.
I'm playing via Gamepass and as I have said before I seem to have more issues with GP than I ever have with either disc games or ones I have purchased. Very strange.
As to the game, played for about 12 hours and still having fun, -

Registered 14 years agoI had a few crashes on pc too, mostly upon closing the game though. Some falling through the floor also. Avalanche made this right? Different sub team i know but Just Cause 4 had it's issues aswell so dunno..
Finished it t'other night and enjoyed for the most part. Really become like the Doom slayer as things progress. -

Registered 17 years agoJust completed:
Console: Xbox1x
Time:19 hours
Cheveos: 420gs.
Really enjoyed and still LOADS to mop up, I might do as I didn't unlock all abilities, however once I complete the story of a "sandbox" style game I always find it hard to stay engaged.
High 8/10.

Yeah, I thought Rage 2 was a solid 8/10. don't understand all the complaints it got, especially about the combat. for me the combat is the best in a FPS I've played since Doom, combined with the varied powers and second abilities on the weapons.
The world was fun to explore and though the story was a bit of a non event after about 20 hours pay I don't think I was bored at any point -

Registered 20 years agoI think I'm going to change my approach to open world stuff I like filling in the maps first, to the point I literally lose the plot. Rage2, RDR2 - hours spent exploring but totally missed the plot points. -
I thought it was one of the worst games I played this year, utter shite and dull as dishwater.
