I'm guessing they're taking a gamble on good will for listening.

To be honest Carey sold it to me regardless. I have a weakness for his antics.

    Sonic looks a lot better.

    The film still looks terrible.

How old are you though? This is probably not aimed at our generation...

This is what I donít really get about it though. Who is it aimed at? The age group who would relate to this type of content donít know who Sonic is or give a shit. And those who are nostalgic about Sonic donít want to see a shit kidsí film.

Just feels like a miss hit on every level.

Yeah it's probably aimed at 8 year olds, but even still, it looks shit.

Ben Schwartz is too Sonic-y to be a good Sonic, and theyíre clearly not letting him go full Jean Ralphio. They should have gone left field and had Billy Eichner do it or something. A hyper aggressive camp screaming Sonic would be better than sounds-vaguely-like-the-game-voice.

It's probably not even aimed at Sonic fans. It's generally just a kids movie through and through. And that's fine. But it can still be a bad movie.

(Also how is nobody pointing out that Sonic isn't a hedgehog in this? He's an alien. In a movie called 'Sonic The Hedgehog'. I'm loving how wonderfully bad a movie this is looking to become.)

Yeah, I thought that too. It's a weird one. Maybe Sonic is more well known amongst 9 year olds than we think?
  • Deleted user 12 November 2019 16:28:42
He can be an alien and a hedgehog. Considering he hails from Morbius (I think) then it's fine.

It actually looks like it might be a fun ride.

Can't wait for the inevitable Fortnight Da Movie

I think if you're going to do a Sonic movie for older people with affection for the character, bringing him to earth is a bad idea to start with. Just keep him in whatever planet he's from, like at the start of the trailer. Develop that world and the characters within it, it looks more fun.
  • Deleted user 12 November 2019 16:32:14
@Lukus It's the same reason Transformers (brrr) is focused on Earth. Execs are big on making it relatable.

This is why everything has to have a love angle.

I think there's a pretty popular Sonic cartoon.

  • Deleted user 12 November 2019 16:36:00
I used to read the comics when I was a kid, I still have a stack of them somewhere gathering dust.

There were some good stories in there. Usually riffing off the mega drive games, but I used to love them.

Did you know that Robotnik was actually called Dr Ovi Kintobor? And that an experiment went wrong and he had some rotten eggs in the fridge which turned him into Robotnik? And that he was sonics friend? And that Sonic was brown and the experiment turned him blue?

Maybe they're saving that bit of sweet lore for the prequel.

There was that guy on here once who said that the plot line to a Sonic comic story was the greatest piece of literature on earth.

Looks like the cartoon was Sonic Boom, ended in 2017.
  • Deleted user 12 November 2019 16:50:27
The trouble with Sonic is, that he's a bit shit. It was COOL and RAD in 1992 if you were a child because the games were great and he had ATTITUDE DUDE.

But ever since it has been desperate clawing to try and make it relevant again.

The games are absolute cack. Sonic Mania was alright, but that was like a mod for Sonic 3.

His gimmick is well out of date and I imagine nobody gives two shits about this film. The best we can hope for are some funny Jim Carrey memes as he looks on form (his form being off his rocker).

@Lukus This is true. Sonic X and Boom were way after my time but apparently pretty popular so this isn't aimed at my age group, nor should it be.

My son's a big fan and after the redesign will probably take him to this.
  • Deleted user 12 November 2019 17:20:57
@Joyless_Man I am a fairly big Carrey fan so that's why I will watch this.

I largely agree with your opinion on Sonic though. I loved him back in the day but he's gone from one disaster to another ever since. I did like Mania plenty though but it's telling that it was a retro game essentially.

I think weíve all outgrown jim Carrey somewhat. Well all of us except him. He had a freshness back in the day when everything made was soulless. Now itís just us that are soulless.
Maybe Iím speaking for myself here but his Schtick is all a bit tired now and almost a parody of itself. Iíd be happy to be proved wrong though.
