Doesn't the Occulus store require a sign-up with an email address already?

What's to stop someone from creating a burner email address, signing up for Facebook with a fake name and no details, and ignoring it forever after that?
I can effectively block Facebook off my network at the router level (realistically I'd use PiHole rather than flashing my router). If I need to log into FB every time I use an Oculus product then I can't.

That said, Like MrWonderstuff, I'm probably just going to skip the next Quest and hopefully someone will come up with a decent, wireless, standalone competitor.

But getting a competitor is going to be... challenging. Discounting the Oculus Store there's Android VR/Daydream, which is dead or low effort, or SteamVR.

SteamVR pretty much requires a PC and none of the mini-PCs are remotely efficient enough. SteamVR on ARM/Android (ie Nvidia) would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath.

How are people feeling about all the compulsory Facebook account + other Facebook news?

Personally, it won't stop me from enjoying my Quest, but it will stop me from buying any future Oculus product.

It also means I think I'll be trying to avoid buying VR games from the Oculus store and will buy from Steam instead where possible.

I'm fine with social experiences on VR (I'd say I want them, even), but I don't want it to be mandatory.

They even replaced the Oculus branding on the Medal of Honor trailer last night. They’ve effectively killed Oculus.

Yeah it's a strange move. Oculus had a good brand image.

Quest 2 announced, tech looks good, but it's a no from me due to the mandatory Facebook stuff. Oh well.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat I think. Ultimately this would have been the endgame no matter what happened so I guess in that sense it's good we got to know before a hardware launch.

Do you actually have to have Facebook, or just have a FB account? Which basically means it is juat a login. I dont use FB anymore, just messenger with family.

Looks like you just need an account but I'm not planning on joining just for VR.

I'll stick with my original Quest until they make it mandatory and then sell it.

Problem is also that they apparently close accounts if they turn out to be fake, in which case you would lose all your games.

Do you mean in terms of them releasing another one quickly? The original Quest was massively delayed - it was meant to come out before the Oculus Go originally.

    And still works! :)

Phones come out every year - I'd get used to this cadence. Actually, I wonder if annual refreshes might make it seem more "real" to the rest of the world?

The pace the mobile tech in this thing moves at, they could easily do a refresh every 12 months for incremental gains. Optics/cameras probably less so, but there're still gains to be made.

What is it, £400 or so? I'd be pissed at the Index's price, but not the Quest's. I'm tempted to jump on board actually...

I was seriously thinking of buying a Quest a few month ago. Glad I waited.

    Might get a Sonos sub.

I bet they’re taking an absolute bath on the cost of materials for that thing, Snapdragon processors are really expensive and that LCD isn’t one you can get elsewhere. They’ll have priced in the value of you getting your Facebook account on there though, which is why it’s less expensive than the last one.

Medal of Honor coming to Steam is good news for me as Revive is a bit of a mixed bag in terms of compatibility.

It's an absolute outrage that you need a Facebook account to use this luxury piece of tech. It's not like Google require a Google account for Stadia.

Wow. That is absolutely scathing. But also all sounds very reasonable and believable. Yeesh. Basically sounds like they've upped some specs whilst cutting various other corners (mainly ergonomics) to bring down the price.

    Valve will be thrilled.

    @MrFlay

I argued a similar point in the front page comments of one article, but actually that ArsTechnica article describes some of the more problematic issues that come from requiring a Facebook account. e.g.: your account being wiped if you violate certain terms across different Facebook platforms. A lot of it seems fairly unlikely, but at best none of it contributes to a more positive experience, and at worst it's potentially nasty, sinister stuff.

Myst remake for Oculus Quest (and also standard 2D version for Steam and GOG).

This is the third remake at this point, and I still say that none of them ever managed to recapture the same look at the original. But still... Myst in VR should be impressive indeed.
