Quake II RTX

Nvidia has patched up the full Quake II release with support for pathtracing/raytracing using RTX cards. It was released yesterday...

Some of it looks amazing. Some of it looks a little too bright and there's an overall change in feel to the game as a result perhaps? Framerates get a good kicking - but its an old game so for many it seems to be running just fine.

    Download free here

Anyone tried it and have an opinion?

    Ooo, thanks for heads up.

Quake 2 is probably my favourite ever game, so I'll be giving this a whirl.

    Does it support ultrawide?

Someone did something similar to this years ago with Quake 1. It was called Tenebrae. I think there was another one called Dark Places too.

I need to find my Q2 discs to try this out.

I remember Tenebrae, looked very fancy at the tine if release from what I recall.

Oh, first 3 levels are free, then you need a copy for the rest.

Oh god almighty, in 4k it's terrible on a 9900K/2080Ti combo... 25 fps average, with huge judder.

Disable the Steam overlay. It won't fix your framerate, but it will solve the judder.

I had to run at 70% scale on my 2080 in 3440x1440 for around 60fps.

@uiruki Yeah, turning off the steam overlay fixed the judder. Dropping below 4k via scaling improves things quite rapidly.

Can't believe Nvidia are pushing this as some kind of demonstration of ray tracing, though. Impressive advert it is not...

Do you think that maybe the RTX line should have come a bit later, like the next generation of cards?

@JamboWayOh Nah, I've been really impressed by some of what I've seen from my 2080 Ti.

This Q2 thing is just a bit pants.

    I found my Q2 CD, but don't have a CD drive on my PC... ;_;

But then discovered I have it copied to my computer anyway \o/

It very much does feel like something where the takeup of RTX has been a bit slow so nVidia have gotten behind someone's student project. There are some really nice subtle little effects like the little shadows cast by the lights on the ground, but yeah. I've defintely been more impressed by my card's ability to brute force stuff like DMC5 or Resi 2 to 100fps and beyond.

Omg, the menu noises sent a shiver down my spine when I booted up.

They've overhauled basically everything. Totally mad playing this in ultrawide. I bought a 32 MB RIVA TNT2 so I could play this thing beyond 640x480. And now I can see the reflection of my own gun when I'm underwater.

It simultaneously looks amazing and horribly dated. Haha.

Fwiw, I've got a 2080, playing at 3440x1440, scaled down to 80% resolution and I'm getting about 50fps. At full whack I was getting about 20-30.

Like Quake 2 I can't get this to load. Shame. It's a great game.

The actual most irritating thing about this version is the fact the music patches for the other Steam version of Q2 don't work.

You can get replacement exe's to get the original up and running. KMQuake2 is a good one.

Now I think about it, there's quake2xp for people who want the game to look nifty but don't have a 2080 to put through the wringer.

Yamagi is my go-to port. KMQuake2 changes one too many things for my liking - the new blaster shot looks really bad. Yamagi looks exactly like the original Q2, except for improved graphical support (resolution, anisotropic, etc).

I always sucked at jumping in Q2. Could barely do the mega health and armour jumps on Q2DM1 :/

Didn't realise jump competitions were a thing.

Me either, the q2dm1 jumps are in there, took me ages to get them down to a t - but that was when our clan practiced nightly, including jumps!

That last map was so cool.

I couldn't do them until somebody told me you needed high fps...
