| Phew! And hopefully the lights in the trees… I want that Christmas tree to finish off my log cabin aesthetic. |

Registered 5 years agoI'm really getting back into this lately. I'd put it down way back in September, due to what felt like a lack of progress, but the game seems to have opened up again. I'm getting new DIY recipes, I'm feeling more inspired in regards to terraforming, etc..
My only issue now is in myself. I want to do so much terraforming each time I go on and then when I next log in, I'm undoing the work I did before simply because I've changed my mind. I need to learn to dial things back and just make small incremental changes to my island, so I can savour the rest of the game.
I still wish the townsfolk had more to say, though. Just like with New Leaf, they're pretty limited, personality-wise, and their letters are complete waffle. It kinda makes the villagers seem a little hollow. -

Registered 13 years ago@DangerousDave_87 I'm still playing each day. December was great for new furniture sets. Leif has finally shown up in my plaza today so I've gone round and replaced all the bushes with the latest flowering ones.
I'm with you wrt the villagers. It's nice to have them wandering around but there's little incentive to talk with them once their photo is acquired.
Been doing quite a bit of terraforming myself over the past few weeks. Dream address is 3967-6716-0329 if you fancy a mooch around. -

Registered 5 years ago@Thingy Yeah. I'll come have a nosey. For whatever reason, I'm still enamoured by the aesthetic of the older games, so I'm trying to keep my island layout quite simple, but it's nuts looking at some of these highly detailed towns. Some folk must have clocked thousands of hours already. They've put so much work into them. -

If you give gifts to your residents their friendship level increases and they give you their photograph. Higher friendship levels also unlocks more dialogue variety. -

Registered 5 years agoIt's been a staple mechanic since the series started. The picture can be placed in your house as furniture and is pretty much an achievement for maximising your friendship with a particular resident.
Some crazy folk try to obtain them all. -

I still think New Leaf is a better game. I played that every day for about 4 years. Mostly in hospital waiting rooms and wards though so that may have coloured my judgement on it. Once hospitals were no longer a thing, I put the game down. -

Registered 18 years agoMrs Boo and I are trying to get the villagers' photos. We speak to them multiple times, shower them with gifts, write them letters...
So far, one photo, and I don't think that we treated that particular individual any differently than the others.
Seems a bit random sometimes... -

Registered 16 years agoYeah, the only I've acquired was that of Jingle. I even give them gifts of wrapped fruit every so often and still nothing. -

Registered 13 years agoTo get the photo in return for a gift, I think the gift has to be worth more than a certain value, and is still a bit random.
I stumbled on this when I noticed I only seemed to get the photo when I gifted them high value bugs/fish (those blue butterflies would probably work currently) whereas fruit/iron/sea bass/clothing etc never worked. I switched to crafted high value items when I noticed.
Another really obscure game mechanic. -

Registered 19 years agoHere's how I get every resident's photo - wrap three pumpkins (any colour) or three foreign fruit fruit daily and gift the newbie. I usually get the photo within a couple of weeks.
It won't affect their interiors and I've found it very reliable and low effort. -

Registered 17 years agoWow! First time I hear of this and I've been playing Animal Crossing since the Cube days! -
I play a few times a week after missing the summer months.
I must say, thus is still a fantastically soothing, warm, gentle experience of a game.
Its my birthday today and I thought I'd check it out, I have to confess to finding the villagers' surprise party rather sweet and enjoyable.
My island is still a total mess though, flowers, furniture, I can't even be bothered to properly kit out my house.

Registered 5 years ago@Thingy Forgot to mention I visited your island dream thing. Man, it's packed! The frame rate was struggling the whole time! Haha.
Very impressive though. I dont think I could ever replicate something like that. I'm way too indecisive. I'm still struggling with fences for my villagers and I'm not a big fan of the path system. It's too rigid. -

Registered 18 years agoMy problem was that I'd filled the island with cool stuff and could've made more cool stuff, but didn't want to knock down all the things I'd spent so long constructing. So I just stopped playing. Would happily pay Nook the Crook a fortune to expand the island. -

Registered 13 years agoHeh, yeah I'm pretty much constantly tearing down and remaking areas of the island. The frame rate is awful, in one of the updates they 'fixed' the huge amounts of pop-in by slowing the game down.
I used the in-game path system for a while but agree it's too rigid. I ended up tearing them all out and making my own, which I like a whole lot better. I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th iteration of those now. The Custom Designs tool is fantastic, I can easily spend a couple of hours at a time just faffing around with it.
Lately I've become a fan of placing trees on diagonal cliff edges, so have been going around the island putting them everywhere. -

Registered 18 years agoWe started visting random dream islands, and we were staggered by the amount of stuff that people have. It's like they need to fill every square inch with paths, fences or just piles of stuff. Some places are almost impossible to navigate because they're so crowded. We've just got the residents houses, the standard buildings, plus trees and flowers and that's it.
Each to their own, I guess, but I like an island to look like an island, not something from "Help! I'm a compulsive hoarder!"

Registered 5 years agoIt's all taste, really. I'm trying to fill up my island, but at the same time keep the aesthetic of the previous few games. I want loads of open space, but also detail near the houses shops and museum.
I think I spent 20 minutes just arranging a path, a vending machine, a telegraph pole and a bin by my Nook's shop the other day. -

Registered 5 years ago@Jono62 Nice town! My girlfriend has done something similar in that she put all her neighbours together too. It looks very tidy.
I did get abuse from at least two of your villagers though. Haha. -

Registered 5 years agoYeah. I think I did that 3 or 4 times with New Leaf. I think I'm going to try and get all the bugs and fish this time around though.
Saying that, I do love a completely fresh town/island layout. Even with all the terraforming tools, I'm always unhappy with my layouts. Always. -

Registered 17 years agoWell, bought this in order to give my 6-year-old niece someone to play with, and now I'm hooked...
Seems like, to get everything (fruits, flowers, and a hell of a lot of recipes) I need to do more than just pillage my niece's island of all her stuff and venture into the wider world.
Does anyone have any experience with some of these trading sites (Nookazon seems to be a big one)? Pretty sure I'm going to lose a kidney or something. -
Random island tours can throw up new fruits, though they're moderately rare. That and you can pick up between 1 and 5 new recipes per day, if you scour your beaches, island tour beaches, shootdown balloons and chat to your villagers when they're at home (crafting something).
It's all designed to be a drip feed, slow paced game. Every day is something new and you're encouraged to come back for years. One of the Nook Miles goals is to play the game over 300 seperate days.
You're expected to build things up gradually over time, such as recipes, fossils, fish, bugs and friendships. That way you're constantly evolving your island, rather than spending hours slogging away at a grand design.
It's entirely your call, but these trading sites will likely kill off the very thing that draws you into the game in the first place.
