I didn’t realise during lectures that your activity points are used per student rather than per instruction. I.e. if you have a student with high motivation it only costs one activity point to instruct them 4 times. I’ve totally wasted points by teaching once and then backing out to the menu to teach someone else.

Surely the chats are part of the core story, now don’t get me wrong it’s heavy on this, certainly the first few hours I’ve played as others have said. But it’s all part of the why we are doing what we are doing, no?

The mock battle was fun. I like that you can see a battle forecast for the enemy's turn now, it's super handy to know when you should be moving someone out of the way.

Played a couple of hours last night. Like it so far. Two gripes though:

    1) Portable mode is rubbish. Muddy visuals and some big framerate drops.

    2) Even docked, battles aren't always quite as clearly presented as I'd like. Distinguishing units from each other is trickier than in the 3DS games.

Btw the 3ds fates game seems to have dropped down to 13:99 in Argos overnight. If anyone’s keen, I’m curious at that price but I’ll likely never play it much or at all. Didn’t stop me reserving one though lol.

I’ve only played portable and it seems more than fine to me. When the game gets going I really enjoy it but I feel there is a bit too much waffling around and not enough gameplay. Still brilliant though.

Does fiddling around with the camera angle and options help with determining which units are which? I'll give it a go in the next battle.

I only found framerate drops when i zoomed the camera out mid battle, even the cursor wasn’t keen on moving cleanly but dropped it back down and it was fine.
It could certainly do with a more birds eye view at times though.

Loving it so far, even the monastery bits are keeping me interested, basically working my way to stealing people from other houses 😂

I feel like a letch playing this game, I’m running around a school trying to get with the hottest girls there. I mean I really feel like a bloody sexual deviant in this.

I’m going to place an extra save down before making my house decision I think....just in case 😬

    @AaronTurner

If it helps (spoilers that were in some of the game previews), you don't actually get to seal the deal until after a timeskip, where you're not a teacher anymore.

Agree that it's a wee bit wrong, even though I am ever so glad that other units can't romance each other.

Also, speaking of creepy, the lady magic teacher could definitely be done for sexual harassment. My MC went up to her office and she basically propositioned him.
  • Deleted user 27 July 2019 10:54:20
@AaronTurner I got around that by always playing fire emblem as a girl. It made conquest bearable

Think I’m going for dorothea, must be the hat or something 🤣

I’ve picked the empire, I’m guessing that’s the bad guys which is against my usual leanings but the girls were hotter lol, and I guess magic isn’t the usual thing for these type of war strategy games, let’s see how it all goes.

Gone back to docked play, jeez it runs like shit around the monastery, seems worse than handheld, totally bearable but also totally noticeable.

Actually it’s giving me a bit of a headache, which isn’t good.

I'm trying to recruit Dorothea. Not for the hat (though it's a nice hat), but because we don't appear to have any offensive magic users. That and her "I get stat ups when I'm next to boys" ability would work well with another character's "I do more damage when I'm next to girls" thing.

Don't give a shit about romance really, but I'll do it if the boosts are good enough. Maybe I'll try one of the bi options.

Gotta say, Dedue (in Japanese it's pronounced 'doodoo', hur hur hur) is my fave so far. Love that deep bass, and he's a defensive beast in combat. Prime General material.

Yeah i played an hour in both and portable seems fine, docked the game is not that pretty anyway, its very PS2 upgraded in places.

I just chosen the Golden Deer. It was either them or the Blue knights, but asking about the students i preferred the more laid back attitude of the students, although i do tend to prefer swords and shields gameplay in game. So still a little conflicted on who i chose. Happy you kind of get to seal the deal later on then and can change?

A promising opening couple of hours, to early to say, but it does feel more traditional RPG then Persona, the calendar feels like an extension rather than its main draw, although i guess that could change, but i feel more at home going up to people and talking than being driven along like P5.

Is there any benefit to the online functionality in this as I see online battles are out, seems like a massive missed opportunity too me.

Well, made my choice to go for Golden Deer based entirely on the fact that Leoni looks like my best girl Chie Satonaka.

Has anyone experienced crashing? I've had two small sessions with the game now and both times it's hard crashed.

I think the maps contain items where other players have died if you’re online.

Was contemplating fucking up my Pig Whip challenge by trying this, but some of the videos I saw were super creepy. Tea party staring time? WTAF?

That plus the skimpy costumes = hard pass. :-/

Hmmm got through the mock battle at the second time of asking as I forgot about healing items.

Not sure if magic is all that really, certainly early game. Was clear to see proper ranged combat has a place in comparison, certainly in battlefields without defensive cover. Magic seems to give you a chance to attack from just a extra square or two which is still dangerous as magic users also tend to be weak. Maybe the deeper class roles will expand options somewhat.

I imagine that you'll need at least one magic user to fight against enemies that have high Defence and low Resistance. Generals and the like.

They're also more versatile than bow users, in that they can attack from either 1 or 2 tiles away. Though bows have other advantages, of course.

True I guess as get close to a bow person and they are fucked.

Can bows not attack from only 1 tile away?

I'm terrible at this, why did I choose hard mode? It took me 3 attempts to do the tutorial battle.

Just change to Normal. I'm fairly sure you can do that without starting again, though you can't change from Normal to Hard.

As for bows, there's at least one that can attack close-range. But mostly they're ranges of 2, sometimes 3.

I'll stick with hard a little bit in case I get into the swing of things. I've only played about 8 hours of Fates: Birthright before. I want to make sure it's not just teething issues with me learning to read the battlefield. If it stops being fun, I'll drop it. There seems to be a lot to learn and get used to and keep track of overall.

The school stuff is the most off-putting bit of this for me potentially but sadly that stuff in Awakening is what got the new fans and kept the series going...

Hopefully we will get Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776 Echoes in the future as well as new entries.

Thought I was going to pick yellow because the guy seemed quite chirpy and reminded me of a Xenoblade character but once I realised the blues were all knighty and chivalrous that was me sold.
