There's still a number of Wii games I own that I need to play. Somebody was telling me that Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was the last great Silent Hill and I discovered last week that I actually own it. Not sure where that's come from.

I bought both The Last Story and Pandora's Tower on the cheap a number of years back, but haven't touched those either. I let my girlfriend play the opening hour of Little King's Story and I haven't given the time of day to the remake of A Boy and His Blob.

It does have the definitive versions of Pikmin 1 & 2, though. I can't imaging enjoying those games with GameCube controls. I nearly ditched the Wii U one until I discovered it supported the Wii remote. It's now become one of my favourite series of games.

With those useless shites at Nintendo in no rush to make Wii games available on Switch, Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 may have to finally happen on the original hardware for me

I never got to play MG 2. The staff in Sainsburys were too confused as to how to remove it from the security box so I gave up in the end. Shortly after that the Wii broke and the fact that Wiis ever existed mostly drifted from my memory.

Looking at walkthrough videos of MG 1 on Youtube, I think it was more fun to watch than I really remember it being to play. It was a definite technical and artistic marvel and they surely made every ounce of the Wiis puny hardware sing. But there was something a bit, uncompelling, about progressing through the worlds. The 360 degree planets were headache inducing as well.

My memory of the Wii was that it had such a lot of potential that never delivered due to the feeble hardware. The amount of kids I saw getting Wiis on one Christmas and an XBox the following birthday because there were no games they wanted to play on it.

But the times when it did what it was meant to do. Friends and family round playing Wii Sports, absolutely magical. Such a shame Nintendo never managed to follow up on that. Why isn't there a Wii Sports for the Switch? And what of all the old folks in Wiid up old folks homes?

Classic Nintendo, create a system that only they were able to make games for that were any good. And then not make enough games for it.

Going to be honest. I’ve been looking at getting wiimotes for my wiiu. They still are expensive somehow. I want them for drunken bouts of wii sports.

Not true. Xenoblade was fantastic, although it says a lot about the system that they had to put a normal controller with the game so you could play it...

But apart from that one game you are right.

If anything there were a lot of games for the system, it's just that a lot of them were the very definition of shovelware.

Played both of the MG games (finished the second, but not the first). Thought they were... ok. Decent enough 8/10 kinda games. Still very much coasting off the legacy of Mario 64, though.

Think they benefited at the time from the kind of buyers-regret-aversion that worked to Nintendo's favour in the GC/Wii/Wii-U generations. There were so few third-party titles worth playing for the systems (exclusive or otherwise) that owners wanted to hype up the decent (but not stellar) first-party titles beyond what was reasonable. That way, they could kid themselves that the system hadn't been a wasted purchase.

The Switch seems to have sort-of broken the pattern for now (and it's been helped by some really bad decisions on Sony's part which have made it the third-party platform of choice for a lot of smaller Japanese studios), but let's see if it holds.

MG1 & 2 were so damn good. Probably my favourite of all the 3d Mario's. I've replayed them countless times.

I really enjoyed the Galaxy games, but didn't rate them as highly initially. It's only as time has gone on that my appreciation of them has grown. I've played some fantastic platformers over the years, but those games are head and shoulders above anything else in the genre.

You could have a hacked wii, fill it with the "good" games (and a handful of GameCube games for good measure), move to a desert island with no internet and have enough gaming goodness to last the rest of your days. Add in the VC/Wiiware titles and you'll be continuing to play in the afterlife.

I've played a lot of wii in the past couple of years and I'm convinced it was maligned back in the day.

FWIW a hacked wii is awesome!

The problem with the Wii was in the HD era it looked like vomit on most tvs, even with after market cables.

I still long for a HD Galaxy and Metroid Prime release on Switch.

In hindsight the most enduring Wii memory is that the so called trolls were proved right whilst the ever present, vociferous Nintenjihadis were proved wrong.

Of course, with one or two obvious exceptions these guys disappeared when the game was up like a sloppy dog turd in a tsunami so they never had to answer for years of bullshit. What was it all for? Here we are years later predominantly using traditional controllers that you said were over with because this was the advent of the motion control future.

The legacy of the Wii is one of ruined games and the virulence of the fad even spreading to other platforms and ruining things for gamers over there too. Any Wii game I liked would have been a lot more likeable with standard controls.

I’m still amazed that there are classic Wii and Gamecube Games like Mario Sunshine, Galaxy, the Metroid Primes, Viewtiful Joe, and... erm... Sonic Colours? that don’t have HD versions yet.

It’s just a matter of time, right?

I was just looking back at timelines and unbelievably the 360 came out a year before the Wii. I just remember refusing to buy a Wii at the time because I already had a 360, which even by that point seemed a far superior console. Anyway as a massive Zelda fan my hand was eventually forced when Skyward Sword arrived and I borrowed one from a from a friend. I remember having to go out and buy a Wii Motion Plus controller for maximum enjoyment. I'm not sure if it was mandatory for that game?

Wii Sports would have been awful with standard controls. Bowling video games were never fun until Wii Sports.

Its kind of a shame motion control has fizzled out, though. There are a few great examples of motion controls done right; Wii Sports, Excite Truck/Mario Kart Wii, the Wii Tiger Woods games and more recently Arms. Gyro controls have proven a great addition as well, when implemented correctly (like with Splatoon). Even pointer controls can improve a game (Resi 4 and Metroid Prime) when done right.

Personally, I think motion controls came about a generation too soon. Western developers were too busy chasing HD graphics and wasn't Japan going through a bit of a slump in terms of the quality of software output generally? For me it seemed like there were plenty of obvious uses for motion control, but so many developers came across as clueless with their attempts. Some shoe-horned it into games designed with a traditional controller in mind, whilst others added gimmicky additions to their games that made no sense and detracted from the experience.

Its good to see that Nintendo hasn't abandoned it completely on Switch. It's even nicer that third parties are at least implementing gyro controls in some of their games.

Yeah gotta agree with this. Hacked mine not too long ago. Was about to be given to charity but thought I'd give it a go as it's supposed to be pretty easy to do. And it is! Definitely recommend using an external hard drive rather than USB (compatibility issues arise otherwise) but it's been a revelation and I love it. The display is still shite for sure, but it's good enough and gives more than it takes away. Not having to switch discs is brill, and (some) of the emulators are a bonus. F-Zero GX still amazing today.

@DangerousDave_87 If motion was too soon we wouldn't have benefitted from its maturation in Splatoon and gyro controls wouldn't be a thing.

Every post-Wii console has had Gyro and been better for it - even if I get funny looks aiming in OoT by waving my New2DSXL 'round like a loon.
